Yes true. On the subject of natives, did they have natives or fuzzy Wuzzies working for the Air force at the bases?
And also Dave, In that letter I sent you from Peter it says ''we have the niggas doing our beds'' the whole time I thought geez thats a bit racist, but someone told me ''niggas''were the new recruits that did all the low jobs.Does that sound right?

Thanks Mac, I would hate to be rowing in a canoe when a plane is straffing you.
Dave, great story! Do you think they would of been Japanese sympathisers or just scared to death of the Japanese? If they were I would of just shot them out of their canoes

The length of tours varied but you'll see in his logbooks, from the time he left NZ till he returned each time, that was a tour. For fighter pilots usually two-three months.[/quote]
Geez i'm in shock!! I checked when his tour was over and in the book it says ''Tour ending on the 31st of May1945''(also the day of his death).
Camtech, I think you're right it says ''Duke of York Islands'' on another page.
Anyone know what a Japanese Canoe is? It seems to come up a lot.
What Does U/C stand for?
Air to Air?and in some parts Air to Air firing.
Dumbo Cover?
Bombs and bullets(straffing and bombing?)

Did the P-51's ever make it to New Zealand to replace the F4U?
Answer to my own question about the Aussie cover,
the Australians were supported by three squadrons of Corsairs from the Royal New Zealand Air Force—Nos. 14, 22 and 26 Squadrons—which bombed and strafed the ground in front of the advancing infantry, as well as a creeping barrage of artillery and mortar fire. With such strong support the Japanese offered little resistance and over the course of two days the 24th Battalion covered almost a third of the distance to the Hongorai

Peter seemed of flown a few ''Smokey Joe'' missions in his F4U.
It's interesting how the RNZAF worked so close with the USAAF and USMC It's noted that Peter flew a few missions to rescue and find downed USAAF and USMC aircraft.
Does anyone know how long one tour would of been? Peter's Biography it says he did three tours.

Thanks Mark!
In regards to, ''Smoked target''it says I smoked target for a 16 plane sweep. Maybe popped smoke for them to identify it? It also says ''I dimmed out at 16000ft due to oxygen supply failure''So I'm guessing it meant blacked out?

Thanks AussieBob, that's great!
I'm wondering why it would be in the Australian War Memorial. Was it taken by an Aussie?

Great idea Dave!
Can I suggest using Youtube,You can add you're audio as well as add photos, credits, video clips and using Windows movie maker makes it very easy,it also makes it easy for people to watch or listen online. Also you can post the links of the video and Windows movie maker will be on you're computer already,no need to download the program.

That's what I was thinking Dave. I wasn't sure if it would of been covered or drifted away. Sounds like it's a lost cause, it's a dam shame too.
I wont give up just yet I'll do some more research first.
Regardless it still will be a very interesting place to visit as I'm sure it's got a lot of WWII history left over.
Cheers.

Thanks for the reply's.
I haven't done to much research on it yet. It was just an idea for now. Thanks for the information it will come in handy.
What are your thoughts on if I should search for it? Do you think it's going to be a lost cause?

Hi Everyone,
I was doing some thinking and I have come up with an idea to travel to Papua New Guinea in search of My Great Uncle's crashed plane.
I have a basic rough idea of where he crashed but i'm hoping with some information I have so far that people could point me in the right direction or help me figure out if it's going to be impossible.
I know so far that he crashed in the sea, I'm hoping it wasn't to far out and to deep to dive. I'm also hoping there will still be anything left of the plane or I hope it hasn't drifted away.
Here is some basic information I have so far-
Pilot P/O Peter Moore, 4212771 (MIA / KIA) Auckland Crashed May 31, 1945 at 11:30am. NZ5459 coded 459
Took off from Torokina Airfield on a bombing mission over Bonis. Over the Bonis peninsula, after releasing its bomb, this aircraft entered a dive turn after releasing its bomb and crashed into the sea and exploded on impact. Crashed in the sea on the North East tip of Bonis.
Please any help or opinions will be greatly appreciated.
