I see from last night's tv news that the latest "war conoe" is about to be fully operational...... do I smell an F.35C somewhere with that deck...... ? Suprises me, more here are so out of the loop, the Commonwealth govt has already indicated its defence white paper, is to consider the RAN/Fast Jet issue. From the RAN's point of view, this was always the plan, wisely they have "stepped" the entire project, to keep the politics doable! Oh yeah, we kept the ski jump, because....ahhhhhh.....uhhmmmm ohh yeah, it's cheaper than removing it....apparently..yeah, that'll do......tell em that......

EVERYone has a shot at Qantas, because their the benchmark for doing so many things, so right, over the long-term. Most of the airlines that have taken their hard earned marketshare are govt backed "Johnny come lately's" [which Qantas stopped been decades ago] or the new players are discount bargin bin style operators, which no-one claims to like and won't readily admit to flying - but hey, if the truth be known, it's those airlines that are just hanging on - often backed by govt wealth funds - and none of them have the brand name power of "Qantas" over the long-term, but the next decade will remain tough, but sooner or later industry rationalisation will occur.

Aust's level of defence spend is low in GDP terms and there is much to be leveraged off with the growing US presence in the region, if we go "off the shelf" with these bigger scale purchases it's pretty easy done balance sheet wise.

Yes, it certainly does ensure a 4.75/5th gen Super Hornet! Great news for the RAAF actually.

1. Govt delays JSF buy up to 2yrs - those already sign-up for remain as scheduled - thoughts: this was going to happen anyway, as the program is taking longer than first planned (what's new!) and a steady approach, as opposed to a "rush" deal is what's req'd. 2. Self-propelled armour - indefinitely delayed "cancelled", likely to come back on the radar with improved budget outlook 2-4yrs. A MUST for the Army. 3. Next generation subs - govt still keen to maintain an indigenous sub program - I'd like to see it capped at modifying and assembling an off-the-shelf option, likely from the US would be best. An off-the-shelf solution would ensure savings to continue a balanced defence program and overcome the dangers of issues like #2 above. 4. Defence review (white paper) brought forward to 2013 - I can tell the govt now what it will say, the Asia/Pacific region is getting warmer.

The Cunning Frogs pull off the old sell planes cheap trick.....they havent tried that one since they started flogging Airbuses cheaper than Boeings. Obviously price will always be a key point in any transaction - but for a fighter program you usually need need to also consider the long-term viability of the program, usually dictated by the primary user - in this case, France.

..... On the climate side by 2100 it is projected that Australia will be drier than what it already is, so they will have to look at desalination plants for their urban areas. The Murray river is slowly drying up and carrying less water because a lot is lost to irrigation, when it is stored in open dams. ... PLENTY of water in Australia - just lazy politicans who don't want to build the infrastructure to shift it south!
