I have a shot with the V-1 light visible as a blur on Friday night - neat! Same on the Harvard flame, realised after a couple of seconds that it was just a burp. And in the ongoing saga of Errol's transport hassles, I knew it wasn't going to be good when the pilot was hand-turning the Q300 prop while on the phone - awaiting engineer to check after birdstrike Wife must have been going to be on the same plane as you Errol ( delayed due to bird strike ) . They are putting her on a flight to Wellington , then on to Auckland ( but she has to catch a connecting flight to Melbourne )

Great day out in the sun! Spit XIV vs V-1 was my moment of the day, but the whole thing was a win really. Weather looking iffy for tomorrow, but even if we get no further flying I'd be a happy chappy. Yes , that MK-X1V vs V-1 was just brilliant . They were probabally much further apart than it looked , but it sure looked close from where I was ( hope someone got a picture of them both in the same shot ) . Weather tomorrow should be okay ( I say optimistically ) - just look at what happened on Friday .

I could have done without the skirmish in the dark and the fire dancers, Whilst I agree that they certainly werent highlights of the day ,I found them a whole lot better than sitting there doing nothing wilst waiting for it to get fully dark . Its an hour or so that must be really hard for organisers to fill in , and I think these acts were better than some Ive seen in the past . Just my opinion though .

A fair bit quieter than most " practice " days ( I suspect they were mindful of looking after the runway surface , but also a lot of display aircraft didnt arrive till later in the day , due to weather ) , still an excellent evening show , with flying carrying on till you could best see the aircraft by looking for the nav lights . ( and fortunatly the wind also allowed the WW1 planes to have a late afternoon practice ). After all said and done , a great start to the weekend - and the fireworks simply had to be seen to be believed . Bring on tomorrow !! ( just dont mention the rivers of mud -- which the organisers did do a great job of manageing )

Well the good news is that the bad weather has mostly passed ( as forcast ) , the bad news is that the heavy rain predicted overnight did also happen . Thats going to be a real headache for organisers so far as carparks etc go . Oh well , just scoffing down some bacon and coffee , then its game on !

There was an article in the paper about them using a drone to drop seeds after the port hills fire . It was a bigish drone ( as far as drones go ) , but still small loads ( compared to a plane or helicopter ) .

I was just thinking, I can only recall ever seeing winglets on the tips of low-winged aeroplanes. Do they not work on the tips of high wing types? If you google " winglets on high wing planes " you will see some examples , but generally high wing planes seem to be slower flying types that dont benifit so much from winglets .

I hope plenty of you guys will attend from Christchurch. Ultimatly the closure of SH1 has added about 2 hours ( possibly a bit more on a holiday weekend ) to the trip between Blenheim and Christchurch , so not really an insurmountable problem ( but its two hours of roads that require a fair bit of concentration , so it does seem longer ) . Hopefully it wont affect too many peoples decision wether to come or not . Pleased to hear that the Corsair and P40 are intending to come , it just wouldnt seem right to not have them there !

"Especially when there will be 3 yaks! Not to mention 3 spitfires!" This may be more supposition than fact? Ah, yes.....maybe it should read "hopefully" instead of "especially".... I wish I was in the know..... I must admit , Id like to see a few more definitly "attending " aircraft on the web site , rather than just pictures of previous shows , however , we have at least one Yak3 ( Steadfast ) , and one Spitfire ( the resident MKxiv ) . I suspect there will be more representives of those types there , but if not , those two are still world class drawcards . Should be awesome !

An improved V-1? How could they improve on it? It was already bloody brilliant! The only thing I can think of is to have it powered by an actual pulse-jet. (Yes, impractical, I know.) As I understand it , the improvements are fairly small . A sound system has been added to make it sound more like a pulse jet ( they actually do make systems for putting into model aircraft to make them sound more realistic , although its probably not going to be anywhere near loud enough ) I believe there may have been some work done around the engine area , to give a more " scale " look . Also some work has been done that will not be noticed , but was in the interests of making it fly better ( such as higher torque servos on some of the controls .

It is a piece of shite and a complete waste of a 500cc (not 2 litre) 2 stroke motorcycle engine A Quick " Google " suggests that the " custom " V4 2 stroke engine has been ditched in favour of a rotary engine .( think rotary car engines , not rotary aircraft engines ) .

Unless he clipped something before getting on the ground, fence, tree. isc Yes , sorry , I didnt wish to seem like I was jumping into a conclusion as to what caused this ( fortuninitly fairly minor incident ) , just suggesting that timing of radio calls may have caused it to be reported as something different to what it was .

Glad all are ok, I'm not sure how an undercarriage problem would cause them to end up in the dry river bed when there is so much grass at Omaka just a few hundred metres away. More likely an engine issue, and I'm confident they didn't overshoot the runway, although those tigers are deceptively quick! Wind direction this afternoon , and the Dried up riverbed comment , means they were definitly short . I suspect the " undercarriage issue " may be a result of the pilot reporting his prediciment after the incident occouring . ( broken landing gear being the main obvious damage )
