ATC only hold recorded info for 12 months, then it is destroyed. It will only be released for incident investigation. Sorry

The last AirNZ 747-400 taxiing for departure...minus most of it's livery. And you may or maynot be able to see this rather low res video of its departure (filmed using my semi-smart phone!) FB video

They might as well have suggested that Martians took it back to Mars for evaluation! Finally someone's listening to me! Although I think its a little further off than Mars.

Yeah... you'd think that the airport company would recognise the benefit in providing for those that want to watch the aircraft!! Imagine what a small cafe would make if it were situated by the spotters' carparks!! I've often thought it would be worthwhile putting a wee coffee cart there!

A go-around is absolutely a normal procedure... even at AA. We have to run things pretty tight at times to get departures away, and it can take a small hesitation by the departing aircraft to reduce the runway separation toward the minimum required, in which case a go-around is a perfectly acceptible manoeuvre to preserve separation. They aren't that infrequent, probably a couple per week?? They are a fact of life when a single runway is nearing capacity.

Just two left and I believe one is already being decommissioned... once the 787 comes on line then I think it's the death nell for the old girls.

If there are 4 of you traveling then the costs equalize, taking into account the time savings even with before/after chores.... and I know which is more fun!!

Dave gets the chocolate fish for accuracy... keep an eye out for Chris Gee's article probably in the next Kiwi Flyer issue... I've had a sneaky peek at some of the photos from our air-to-air photo shoot on Saturday... sure is a photogenic aircraft!!

Fortunately (for me!) I wasn't flying it at the time but was watching from the ground (I had flown it just before!!). Apparently after the initial WTF moment it actually flew pretty well as a convertible, and Grant considered flying it back to Ardmore from where we were practicing (Mercer), but as he was wearing sunglasses and couldn't look back to assess the damage to the tailplane for fear of loosing the sunnies if he turned his head, he thought it more prudent to land back at Mercer.

Thought that we needed a thread for those snapshots taken on your cellphone when you don't have your D-SLR with you but have caught something worthwhile. I'm often "caught short" without my camera gear either at work or elsewhere and have to resort to the trusty cellphone. Allowance should be made for those single digit megapixel phones so they're probably not going to be anywhere near the expected quality of those we're accustomed to see from Mr Conroy et al. Anyway... here's a few "starters for 10..." Lake Karapiro today The result of an inflight canopy loss back in March... Luckily no one was hurt!

Just a note on the Tri-Plane at Wanaka... yes it was attributed to a rabbit hole... yes there were many around but each morning we would task one of the helpers to go out and fill as many as possible before we would declare the grass runways "open", in fact I filled one or two myself on the days leading up to the shows... it was also an item for the pilots' briefing to be aware of them. One of the bigger hazards was the first year when the P40 did the gun runs... the spent shells were 'sposed to fall in a designated area behind the pyros, but either the wind carried them of the gun run wasn't quite where it should have been as most of them fell on the grass and main runways, and being that it was the last item of the show before we opened up for Arrivals/Departures we were left to pick them up ourselves (as all the official helpers buggered off back to the hangars), so there's me (the chief Air Traffic Controller) charging around on a quad bike picking up shells with an ATR on short finals and a huge lineup of lighties waiting to depart... mind you it meant that I collected about 40 or 50 shells as keep sakes! And before anyones asks, I've given all but 3 away!!
I was also there and witnessed the Chippy crash, in fact I was standing in the BP tent talking to a crew member from the Police Eagle helicopter when he went in, and standing not 3 or 3 metres away from the pilot's wife... not one of my happier WOW memories!!
I was also at the Auckland show and watched both the Se5 and BD5J incidents... the Se5 in particular was obvious that it wasn't going to complete the intended manoevre... a climbing turn to follow the TriPlane.
