Kiwicorsair ... Mike, "So confirming what I have seen in reference pics of Kiwi PV-1s . No co pilot control Column installed . Copilot seat folded down . The left side (from in front of the A/C) of the bulkhead is removed? Now is this a straight cut only leaving the part of the bulkhead behind the pilot? Also no pedals I'm pretty sure. Someone correct me if I'm wrong? See - rnzaf.hobbyvista.com/venmod.html - scroll down to B&W photo Cheers Wally.

Mike, back in the day ... before I joined Flickr and before I knew about RNZAF Ventura cockpits, I built NZ4509 depicted after her Jan 1944 repair and partial repaint, following her epic air battle over St George's Channel on Xmas Eve 1943 ... rnzaf.proboards.com/thread/16183/pv-1-ventura-nz4509It's still a favourite build of mine for several reasons. I even managed to open the pilots sliding window, as seen in the B&W photo on page 248 of 'Air-to-Air' by Chris Rudge. The model is now owned by the son of an RNZAF pilot who flew it later during 1944 ... A slightly sore point with the Revell kitset for me is the incorrect position of the Starboard Rear Fuselage window and its surrounding panel lines. If you ever do one with Roundel-Bars insignia you'll see why. I've corrected these errors now on 2 occasions ... some minor surgery, filling and rescribing ... Cheers

I've finally completed a long build of our favourite Beaufighter ... Tamiya 1/48 kitset, Tamiya enamel & Aeromaster acrylic paints ... A word about Aviaeology's new decal set, 'The Coastal Strike Wings Dallachy Beaufighter TF.Xs' That word is SUPERB!!! The volume and quality of research information is extraordinary and the set covers no fewer than 16 aircraft from 144, 455 (RAAF) and 489 (RNZAF) Squadrons. Gets my highest recommendation. Welcome back to modelling ... Looks excellent, well done! The Tamiya Corsair is an excellent kit, isn't it? With the option of these Xtradecal decals plus Ventura's new set the range of Kiwi Corsair dark blue roundel-bars is pretty much covered ... Gotta recommend www.kiwimodeller.com to you if you're not already a member. Another heck of a friendly forum just like this one. Incidently, you can't go past THIS SITE for research and resource information. A better place and bunch of people simply does not exist. Cheers Wally

Looking good so far kiwicorsair. Great to see a build of NZ4509 in this livery. She's contained in several decal sets but seldom gets depicted in models I've seen.
I've modified one quite simply by cutting off the left side of the bulkhead (as seen from front) and using the folding 'jockey' seat from the kit instead of the full co-pilots seat. From memory I think you remove the co-pilots controls as well? Search on here for other builds too, Calum did an excellent one of 'Slippery Sam' (I think?) recently with the full navigator/radio compartment.
Cheers Wally.

Dave, I entirely agree with your deductions regarding White Stars and a Yellow Moon, and I've let Kitsworld decals know about them both. I believe this limits the discussion largely to what colour the bodice part of the witch's dress is, either red or blue? (assuming it is a lighter shade of grey and therefore not black.

Hi Everyone I'm resurrecting this old thread because Kitsworld decals has an impending release of sheets in 1/72 and 1/48 containing this 6 Sqn PBY-5 Catalina NZ4020 XX-W "The Wandering Witch". kitsworld.co.uk/index.php?CATEGORY=4&SUB...ORDN=2679&RNZ=317584 This came to my attention on kiwimodeller yesterday thanks to Ian : www.kiwimodeller.com/index.php/forum/22-new-products/31241-kits-world-decals-kiwi-catI immediately emailed Kitsworld via their website with my opinions, vis - 1) In 1945 these Flying Boats carried 4 x wing roundel-bars 2) Uppers bars white only 3) Lower wing roundel-bars white with blue borders 4) Other manufacturers have produced the roundel-bars and I named Aeromaster and Oldmodels Decals: Here I also mentioned the blue-white-blue ratio. 5) I said my personal belief, based on the B&W close-up Dave has posted above, is that it's conceivable the Witch's bodice is not black but red?(I guess it might also be dark blue? I didn't mention this colour in my email). The bodice looks a slightly lighter shade of grey to me than the hat, cat and skirt which I believe we can affirm (or feel almost certain) are black. Today I received a reply thanking me and saying they will update the sheet accordingly and include two versions of the nose-art so the modeller can choose. Now I am feeling uncomfortable because I believe there are people here at rnzaf.proboards with considerably more knowledge of the aircraft and markings than I have. Kitsworld seem open to feedback in advance of releasing the sheets so I encourage anyone with strong feelings about the subject to contact them via their website on the link above. Regards Wally.

Yes indeed flyjoe180, I was almost hoping you wouldn't mention it. It looks vaguely like the silhouette of a little dog to me? There's also an element of 4 leaf clover or something? Any ideas? Does anyone know for sure?

Brush painted using Tamiya enamels and AeroMaster acrylics. Montex paint masks. Decals by Airfix, Xtradecal (1/32 30" Sky Code Letters - for 24"? at 1/24), Fantasyprintshop decals (1/48 15" Black Serials RAF WW2 - for 8" at 1/24), Testors Dullcote. Thanks for watching folks. All comments appreciated. Wally.

Calum, thanks. You'll almost certainly hear from me sometime re Code Letters/Numbers. Historical images of OK-1 appear to be rare indeed. I have only ever found one. It shows Keith Park standing behind the starboard wing root with only the roundel and 'K1' visible forward of it. So starboard side was O-K1. This gives a good reference to letter/number size and shape. Port side would have been OK-1 I'm almost certain. All the other images I found were depictions of the Hurricane used in the film 'Battle of Britain' and the Motat monument. Images of his Malta Hurricane OK-2 show a pennant on the port side as might be expected, so I would assume OK-1 had one ...? Good luck and if you find any other pictures please share them. Cheers

For those who might be considering building this kit and using the kit decals, my experience of them has not been so good. They are thick and definitely best applied using hot water in my opinion. Also there is rivet detail along the upper fuselage which I found it necessary to sand back after breaking my first fuselage roundel. Thankfully there are 4 in the kitset - DSCN2625 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2637 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr Sadly, there is also some very very slight 'out of register' on the large upper wing roundels and the fin flashes - DSCN2634 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr Many airbrush painters will no doubt paint their markings on, which might be wise, or Xtradecal (Hannants) make aftermarket decals which may be better. The 1/32 30" Sky Code Letters used on here are Xtradecal, and the 8" Black Serials are actually 1/48 15" Black Codes by Fantasyprintshop.co.uk, who make an extensive range of Codes and Serials. The biggest challenge was cutting the port upper wing roundel to size for the open gun bays. I used the closed door part to size the opening, which worked reasonably well - DSCN2632 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2633 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr Then I had to apply the cut-out part to two separate doors, which will eventually be joined at an angle - DSCN2635 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2636 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr Things were looking okay until this morning when, after 48 hours drying, my glosscoat over the decals woke some of them up and they bubbled. I've now been through a long process of pricking and applying microsol, pressing and applying microsol again. They have now settled pretty well, as good as I can get them. DSCN2638 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr I decided to go with aircraft code first, then squadron codes, reading from left to right on the starboard side, which seemed to be more common with Typhoons than with Tempests ...? DSCN2640 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr I'm gonna give the decals another lengthy drying period before applying another glosscoat. Cheers Wally.

Yes, I suppose people had their Brownie Cameras out snapping pictures of the air battles high above them. I wonder why Ray Holmes didn't get a VC? I guess not everyone can have one, but his courage does seem rather extraordinary.

Hi Calum, as far as I can tell there isn't a specific decal sheet for Hurricane OK-1. I am endeavouring to obtain correct size and shape White Code Letters, which I think were 24" high on his aircraft, rather than the 30" Grey Code letters generally used on Hurricanes. My search so far has led me to Fantasyprintshop on eBay (or their website .co.uk) It appears the project will require buying 1 x 1/48 24" White Code Letters & Numbers RAF WW2 FP886W, which has the correctly shaped 'O' but the wrong 'K'. The correct 'K' can be found on 24" etc RAF 1946 - FP895. Neither of these have the correct '1' with the little 'flick' bit, so I'd probably cobble these together, or there might be a correct '1' on my Berna decals sheet where everything else is wrong and the white density may be different ....!!! The result of my building aircraft for which there are no decal sets has led me to owning large quantities of different Code Letters and Numbers in Sky, Grey, Red, White, Black and Yellow (RAF & US 45degree mostly) so if you ever want any please just ask. www.ebay.com/itm/RAF-Numbers-and-Letters-24-WW11-WHITE-1-48-FP886W-/200404924822?hash=item2ea9107996:m:mUraBMGwOkg4tWtFjEEiXKwI imagine Keith Park's OK-1 will also require a Wing Commander's or Group Captain's pennant, although I can find no evidence of his Hurricane wearing one. There may have even been a special pennant for Air Vice Marshall (if he was that, apologies if he wasn't)? I have found fantasyprintshop decals to be of good quality and I own a bunch of their Codes and Serials. I recently purchased 1/48 15" Black Codes because they equate to 8" Black Serials at 1/24 scale for the Typhoon. Their eBay shipping cost from UK is very reasonable and incredibly quick. Ordered Thursday and received Tues morning in Kohukohu of all places. If you or anyone else comes across a decal set specifically with OK-1 on it, please let me know. I don't have any particular desire to own vast numbers of Code Letter & Number decal sheets. Once again, if you or anyone else want some, like maybe 1/32 48" Sky Codes, which are HUGE, purchased by mistake for the Tiffie, or any size in any scale any colour, especially WW2, ask me first. Cheers Wally.

While I'm tidying up loose ends this morning, here's some finished pics of my two 'gals' from the 457thFS, 506th FG, Iwo Jima, June 1945. #528 "The Enchantress" flown by 2nd Lt William E Saks, was one of 24 aircraft which failed to return from the VLR escort "weather mission" of 1 June 1945, later called "Black Friday" DSCN2496 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2493 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2497 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2501 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr Mustang #542 "Fighting Lady" piloted by Lt Ralph S Gardner, shot down a Japanese aircraft over Honshu during the VLR escort mission against Tokyo on 10 June 1945 - DSCN2481 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2484 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2482 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr The aircraft carries the larger 110gallon 'teardrop' underwing drop tanks, used, (as far as I can tell) only by Mustangs in the Pacific towards the end of the war.
