Hi Calum You will find quite a lot of information about the torpedo and some about your aircraft in this thread - rnzaf.proboards.com/thread/20645/hampden-an127-rnzaf-leuchars-1942There is a port-side colour drawing of P6-6 in there. FYI, I eventually repainted the tail fins woodgrain though I may not have posted photos. I very much go along with your decision on the cockpit of this Beaufighter, which is really rather good OOB. And yes, totally agree, here's hoping Hampden, Beaufort and some other WW2 classics are on Airfix's [short-term] development list!? Cheers Wally.

Gotta agree with all those comments, perhaps especially "I'm seriously impressed with your decal results". Such good work in such small scale.

I'm building 2 x P-51D Mustangs simultaneously, one a commission as 457th FS, 506th FG # 542 "Fighting Lady" including Eduard cockpit detail and True Details wheels 02-DSCN2239 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr and the other for me OOB using the remaining decals as #528 "The Enchantress" 01-DSCN2238 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr These aircraft, based at North Field on Iwo at the end of WW2, used late-war 110gal 'teardrop' drop tanks the same shape as the 75gal ones only larger. 07-DSCN2244 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr These are not available as aftermarket accessories so I am appealing here if anyone has teardrop shaped drop tanks from either Monogram's F-80 or Trumpeter's Sea Fury FBII, both of which are serviceable or adaptable injection molded versions? I can replace the (apparently incorrect) Trumpeter ones with Barracuda resin corrected drop tanks if required. Sure hope someone can help? Onwards with the build, which kinda messes up the work bench, 2 of everything to keep track of - 21-DSCN2259 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr My attempt at woodgrain cockpit floor, this the OOB version with some scratch decals added - 27-DSCN2265 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr The Eduard IP for "Fighting Lady" is decidedly more accurate, with extra cockpit details too - 22-DSCN2260 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr I also scratch detailed and decaled my cockpit but it's hard to match the Eduard version with accurate electrics and placards - 23-DSCN2261 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr It's real nice once it's all in place - 41-DSCN2279 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr 37-DSCN2275 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr 38-DSCN2276 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr And the fuselages are together - 44-DSCN2282 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr To be continued ... Please email me or PM me if you have suitable drop tanks. Thanks Wally.

Hi again Another question in advance of building Classic Airframes 1/48 Boulton-Paul Defiant for the Battle of Britain GB over on kiwimodeller. The desired subject is a Defiant flown by F/L Tom Fitzgerald (RNZAF) who I believe transfered to 141 Sqn from Blackburn Skuas on about 12 Sept 1941. I've found out considerably more information about Fitzgerald but can't ascertain an actual aircraft he flew. Does anyone know the codes and serial number of a BP Defiant flown by Tom Fitzgerald? 141 Sqn operated TW- codes I believe, as there are a couple of aircraft represented in decal sets for 1/72 scale. I will, of course, post the finished model on here (if my computer allows me to). Any assistance gratefully accepted. Regards Wally.

Komata, it's interesting you raise the subject of who flew them out to NZ. In my research I do recall seeing it involved 124hrs of flying time! (Or perhaps total time?). Yesterday I took the 'Harold Kelsey' Sunderland & Avenger models to show his younger cousin Stan Bawden who still lives here in Motukaraka. Stan and wife Phyllis mentioned that another cousin of Stan's (I think) - and I will need to contact them again for the name - flew one of our RNZAF Sunderlands out from England, but I am not sure which. Yet another cousin and (I believe) RNZAF veteran , Graham Bawden, lives at Ranfurly Veterans Home where my own father Owen Hicks lives now. The family has very strong connections to RNZAF and particularly Avengers, Venturas and this Sunderland. Harold recounts a tale of 'buzzing' the Motukara area where he grew up in a Ventura when he was home-based in the BR Squadrons in 1945. There is a really good Sunderland thread on here, where I found many useful B&W photos, most of them showing a distinct tide-line. Wings Palette provided a colour picture of an RAAF Sunderland with a kinda greeny-brown tide-mark and I checked out a local fishing boat in dry-dock and an old bathtub laying outdoors at a mate's place. I jokingly said on kiwimodeller I copied it from my own bathroom. Thanks for the feedback and enjoyable discussion.

I patriotically agree about the RNZAF roundels. Even with colour discrepancies they make any aircraft rock. Good question Zac, Harold Kelsey flew home from Fiji in it so I guess up there it was at anchor in Lathuala Bay (forgive spelling), which is tropical and I believe is very sheltered? Don't know about stagnant though?

Thanks for your comments. Baz, not Vodafone - which would probly be much faster - but a very old laptop with issues connected via copper in a Rural Broadband area with issues in a very remote place, Kohukohu, North Hokianga. Sometimes it all slows down to little more than dial-up speed.

Current computer and broadband issues make it impossible for me to post the whole build on here, but it can be mostly seen over on kiwimodeller.com Here's my finished Short Sunderland Mk III (Transport) NZ4102 "Tokomaru", probably more like mid-'45 as I have weathered her quite alot. Photos do show severe exhaust & other (oil?) stains on the wings. The rectangular windows are black decals cut from D-Day stripes, with some small round ones punched out on an old leather punch! Montex masks for Italeri Sunderland Mk I were used which didn't quite match the dear old Airfix specs. I sanded the Airfix rivets back but not off and scribed some entirely fictitious panel lines for effect. Purely a fun build for a very dear elderly gentleman from Motukaraka and WW2 veteran. And great fun it was too! I shall hopefully post photos of when I present it to him within the month - DSCN2185 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2184 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2183 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2179 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2177 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2191 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2193 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2194 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2195 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2188 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2202 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2199 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr Airfix 1960 kitset, some scratch-built cockpit detail, Aeromaster acrylic & Tamiya enamel paints, Ventura decals (1/48 PV-1 Ventura insignia overlayed on fuselage & underwings - they are 2 decals thick - plus 1/32 Avenger upper wing insignia - with consequent RNZAF Blue colour discrepancy. (The upper wing roundels are quite faded!). Enjoy!!! Regards Wally.

Here's my completed 1/48 Avenger depicted as NZ2513, one of two aircraft converted to carry a 75 gallon tank and spray equipment in the bomb bay for the purpose of spraying diesel onto the Japanese gardens in Northern Bougainville. Pilot Frank Holmes, Navigator Harold Kelsey, Turret Gunner [Arch Alexander(?)]. This is for long-term loan to Harold along with his 1/72 Short Sunderland III. I couldn't do Watering Can mission markings decals so these are cut down italic 'III's from Hobby Boss's F6F Hellcat "Minsi III". Not great real close up but necessity is the mother of invention - DSCN2229 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2215 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2219 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2214 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2231 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2204 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2207 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2209 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2217 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr I had to invent and scratch build what is in the bomb bay, although Frank Holmes is clear in his memoirs it was a 75 gallon tank. He apparently didn't favour 'nose art' either so I have depicted NZ2513 as an Avenger without any. Cheers people, thanks for your comments. I want to build that Dereck Kane Spitfire some day, and I would love to build an Egyptian Hurricane from the Squadron he apparently delivered (or commanded the delivery of) to Egypt in 1944. From memory the Hurricanes are pictured in the same Classic Warbirds in which the above photo is also reproduced. I believe this Spitfire wears the same Dark Brown/Dark Green over Sky camouflage as Alan Peart's Spitfire Mk VIII which Calum is building on here at present? It certainly looks dark in B&W photos. Regards Wally.

Here is my rendition of Evan Mackie's Blue Malta Spitfire Mk Vc depicted in June 1943 - DSCN2157 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2126 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2128 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2138 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2136 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2134 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2132 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2133 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2151 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2129 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr I've assumed Malta was a fairly harsh environment for aircraft and weathered it somewhat more than photographs depict. Special Hobby 1/48 Spitfire Vc 'Malta Defenders', Eduard self-adhesive cockpit detail set, Master Brass Canons & some Eduard spares (canopy) & stencils, Victory Productions "Spitfire - Empire Aces" decals, Aeromaster acrylic and Tamiya enamel paints. Enjoy. All feedback appreciated. Regards Wally.
