Great photos there Shorty ... some neat neat stuff.
Do you perhaps have any of the wartime OTU (F) photos - No 2 & 4 ...kinda interested in 4 OTU aircraft . ( OD Codes).

Think you might find Barry Nelson - a Wg Cdr in the RNZAF - heading up the A-109 Helo Project in Milan, Italy...in fact I´m sure he is as had a BBQ and beer with him a few weeks back...same good guy.

There are also bits of A-4 in the 'pile' there as well...windshield, wing etc....and a very chilling collection of helmets in a display case inside...you don't leave your helmet behind by mistake....
The Air Force Musuem in Hanoi (out of town) is actually better - some F-105s & a B-52 amongst others... a lot of SAM-2 & -3s plus radar setups.
If you get the chance go see the Paul Doumier bridge as well over the Red River (it has been renamed) - but the site of several historic raids...including the well known LGB strike in 1972.
Gia Lam is also worth a visit - its still a military base..but the guards let us have a look around anyway.
Good background reading are Jack Broughton's 'Thud Ridge' & 'Going Down-Town' - F-105 operations from Thailand..plus some (well most) of the USN Yankee Station History.
Down South - Ben Hoa is worth a look - couple of the Museums in Saigon are good (but full of tourists)... Than Son Nui is good if you can get around the back...left of the old (MAC) terminal as you're looking at it....but time has erased much of the older stuff...many of the old buildings at Da Nang are pretty much cleared away now.... up in the hills, Khe Sanh is now a National Park.
Pretty sad deal all around...but mighty interesting for us aircraft nuts.

Hello
The photo is definitely NZ1044 at Harewood ... early only.... it was painted all white around 1978 (NAC - ANZ merger). NZ1044 went to Harewood (NAC) originally in 1971...and NZ1041 went to Manger (ANZ) ... also in 1971. Both stopped flying in 1963.
NZ1041 went back down South after ANZ closed the Apprentice School in Auckland... around 1988. It was painted in various shades of the ANZ - Teal colours over the years.
I've NZ1041 at Omaka - starting the rebuild to fly...and NZ1044 is just out of Rolleston - saw it at Xmas...not much work yet done on it...but it too is going to be Returned to Fly.
Great photos - thanks !
Rgds John.

Just found this thread ... kinda interesting...especially the shot of the RNZAF people at Moffat Field 1965-66 and the comment about the 'Basketball Jones' Officer...as that is my old man - Mac Saunders. I've seen a few other photos but not that one. Went to Moffat myself a few years ago ....the Airship hangar (in the background) is simply huge...Ames Research Centre is adjacent ..but of course Moffat is now closed...I think in its day they had something like 150 P-3s there.
Believe the Kiwis were there for a year - prior to the P-3s arriving back in NZ.
PS- the old man has been dead for 10 years now...and I look very similar apparently !
