Great Thread ....and thanks to xbaggy for clarifying it all. Indeed NZ1037 was repainted when Ray Hanna got it - the black chequers are something borrowed from his RAF days. Here are two shots - NZ1037 & NZ1056 - both taken in 1975 - seems to be a bit of a 'white' wavey line under 1056... Anyone have some FAC shots of 1017 however ? Rgds Hvd1041

Wonderful wondeful reading..and thank you so much for putting them be put on line here - will be great to re-read one of Popeye's books and / or match it with the Sqns history of the same days.
Thanks again.

Great photos there Hairy - always neat to see camo Harvards - especially those painted all over - keep them coming. Am I correct in assuming these aircraft were attached to Operational Sqns and not on ITS - ATS Training units ?

Hi Dave - sure does sound interesting...any chance you could post a few pages ?
Am sure the RNZAF Musuem or 75 Sqn would love a copy of this Logbook - well maybe no point in sending one to 75 any more however ...grrrr

Hi All Here's an interesting Harvard shot I came across - a 16 Sqn MK II - at Fairhall - looks like in front of the (still existing) Hangar just over the back fence from Longbank at Woodbourne. 16 Sqn of course was a P-40 unit - but does anyone know how many Harvards they had on strength..and did they take them up to the Islands with them ? Rgds John.

Great thread - knew Pete as a kid in the early 1970s then caught up again 1988-89 when at WB in the mob. What a character he was ! ....and a good talker ... get him and John Smith together and just sit back and listen ...mind you little chance getting a word in edgeways. Nice guy - died 1989 I believe with cancer - the chemo was pretty hard on him.
I recall the steam train up at his place on Ben Morvan road - house was called 'Biggin Hill' - believe he used to fire the boiler up and take it outside and around on his turntable. Used to run one of his Kestrals around at Brian Barry st as well.
Nice guy.

The entire sale - in my humble opinion - is and has always been a joke...perpetuated by a couple of self-serving interests....Ernst & Young chief amongst them.
The A-4s were a great credit to all the hard working and clever people who kept them going and flying for the 30 odd years of RNZAF service ( I was on the original Kahu team and worked them for a number of years - great times) .....but..
...by 2001 they were of marginal use to anyone else - KAHU really made them very different to all other A-4s...and the effort to keep them going was really only manageable to an airforce...which neither of the 'new Customers' were...and that window of opportunity has long since gone...well gone.
Great aircraft - but give them to Museums and move on...

Hi Dave
Actually the 0.30 cal wing gun was used on Wings courses up thru the early 1960s at least ...as were rockets...at Birdlings Flat.
I really don't know if the RNZAF ever used the cockpit 0.30 cal however...as someone said here, a bit of a stink etc....and it is realy really important that the gun interruptor worked well...
At some stage, the RNZAF took out the US N-4B gunsight and put in British ones as well - that big oval shaped cutout in the glareshield.
...any old Armours out there ?

That's the attitude Bruce - and second the enthusiasm...nothing is impossible - just time & money ! The 'T-6 Heaven' mentioned is Lance Aircraft in Dallas www.lanceaircraftsupply.com/index.html...well worth the visit - actually in my books - reason alone to go to Dallas...a ton of Harvard, T-6, SNJ stuff...and knowledgeable friendly people. Great shots Paul ....really great. Do you think you might get a chance to get those colour slides scanned and posted...most photo shops now have a scanner set up for slides...and it is pretty reasonable.
Heck - I'd even pay for them to be scanned myself...based on how great the other shots are !

Hi Guys
Have seen this Project a couple of times...and it would be a challenge...not impossible however. Hvd 2Bs are a rarity in NZ - that's why the RNZAF didn't put them into Serivce either.....
Honestly the money is not the biggest hurdle - it is the time to work on it - and the workshop etc etc ...this is coming from a guy who has been involved in building 3 of them.
For the money however - there are better Projects IMHO...have a look on barnstormers.com - some real bargains come up - and a container from the US isn't the end of the world.
Having said that - if you got it at a good price - and then got the bones of another Canadian one - you have a good start...but it is the time you have to put into it that is the big hurdle.
...but Harvards really haven't gone up much in value over the last 10-15 years...you can still get a flyer in the US for about $150. It's not the money.

Hi Steve
You may be right about the photos - and apologies if you are.....you seem to have recorded exact dates etc...and that second shot is a mighty good one !
I was at TTS & ARS for parts of 1983 & 84 - and used to wander over to the 727 & Harvards often - and took several photos.
The 727 eventually got broken up....and 1051 & 1038 ended up at Omaka and stored under some pine trees when they were bought. 1051 ended up with Lyndon Knowles...and is now with Judy Pay in Australia...1038 with Greg Ryan I think... does he still have it ? ...was kinda stripped out last time I saw it.
...anyway - apologies if they are your photos... I've several hundred Harvard shots.
However - did you have some more you could post there Steve ?

Hi Paul
Can't say I've ever seen a partial 'checkered & non-checkered' cowl on a Harvard - but of course it is possible.
There were a ton of spare cowls around however - I recall seeing the Harvard Red Checkers ones out at Weedons in the mid 1980s - full set for all the aircraft on the CFS team... just sitting there...maybe they are still there ?...in with the 727 Flight Controls removed from 7273.
Many of the Harvard cowls are actually old MK II cowls - you can see the patch on the RHS where the exhaust duct was in a slightly different location to the MK IIAs & MK IIIs. I think the only real problem with the cowls was the odd loose or missing rivet or the entire cowl stretching and not being enough travel left on the tightening turnbuckles inside each section... in which case a bit of a rebuild might be the only answer.
When 1076 was sold it didn't have the Checkered cowl or name on it...I suspect all the Checkers cowls were removed for the sale - and they were the ones I recall at Weedons.
Was anyone here at the Sale of the Harvards ?...only ever heard about it second hand...what prices did they go for ? I've heard $4000 - $5000 for a good flying one...a bargain.
Rgds Hvd1041
PS - Merry Christmas to one and all by the way !

Great shots again there Shorty !....love those Harvards.
I also have that four ship of Harvards - must be an RNZAF Official shot...I suspect it is the '62 or '63 CFS Team - I recall talking to Stu Boys once - he had the same shot - he was on the team at the time.
Merry Christmas
Rgds John.
