100 years ago today (French time zone) the famous Bleriot XI made its first flight. Its first flight was just 200 metres in length but it kicked off a legandary career. For many countries the Bleriot XI was the first aircraft to fly. In NZ it was the first aircraft type to used by our military "Britannia" also a ground trainer was used during WW1 to train our military pilots. During its career the Bleriot XI served in the Italy libya war of 1911 (first aircraft type to be used in war), the Balkan war in 1912 and WW1. It was one of the first aircraft to be looped and parachute trails were conducted from it. It was most famous for being first to cross the English channel. Many replicas have been built and one is in advanced stages in NZ being built from scratch and the oldest surviving aircraft in the world is a UK registered 1909 Bleriot XI.

Hi Marcus The CT4 F would be a perfect candidate, its cheap and getting cheaper with the falling NZ dollar and its being marketed as a lead in trainer package with the PC-9 as its companion. It would be interesting to see how the CT4 F is doing with the Australian defence force proposal its submitted. Shane

Hi Dave Theres a brilliant book u might find in your local libairy called Armoured fighting vehicles of NZ 1939 to 1959 by Jeffrey Plowman (no 4 of the series). It has details of all the armoured vehicles built in NZ over that time with a good section on the Bren gun carriers. Over 1100 Bren gun carriers were built in NZ and there were some kiwi modifications to them.

Brilliant thank u very much for that info . My friend Kingsley served in the Anti Aircraft section (dispite his love for planes) about 20 years ago. He served on the Namibian border. They were armed with captured Russian designed AA cannons and he said on several ocations they were bombed by MiGs with poor aim.

I read in an Aviation News newspaper that the SAAF was evaluating the 750XL but there was no further details in the article.

Sorry Dave no i dont know him. But if u can think of his name and if he still lives here im sure i would find him to be a very interesting person to talk to . When i lived in Invercargill i became friends with the neigbour who lived behind our house. He gave me a stack of great books to keep and he showed me his collection of model aircraft. If u go upstairs at the Fighter pilots museum in Wanaka, he made all the model aircraft on display up there.
