Dave Thomas (Auckland-born) trained as a pilot in RNZAF and served as a flying instructor at Taieri from Jan 44, then staff pilot at 2 SFTS (Woodbourne) from July 44, before being posted to 2 OTU at Ohakea for a fighter cse 30/9/44. He was posted to 23 Sqdn ("The Ghosts") on 30/1/45. completing two tours in the forward area, and was transferred to the Reserve 28/11/45, then to the General Reserve from 1950. His new service number from 1949 was 132274. On returning to civilian life he joined Union Airways and subsequently the new National Airways Corporation in 1946, and ultimately flew most of NAC's types, including up to B737s. He lived much of his working life in Christchurch and I got to know him briefly when I purchased a Fiat X1/9 (a car of mixed virtues) off him about 25 years ago. Dave was a big, strapping fellow of friendly disposition and he loaned me his precious wartime logbooks for copying, and also showed me his (quite rare) late-WW2 pattern NZ-manufactured flying helmet, made from a breathable khaki open-weave cotton material. I was aware these existed but had never seen one previously. David D

RIP Nigel From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999 : DAVEY, Flight Lieutenant Nigel Albert, AFC.
M82650; Born Auckland, 22 Aug 1947; RNZAF 11 Jan 1966 to 14 Jul 1978, Res. to 14 Jul 1982; Pilot. Citation Air Force Cross (NY1978): Flight Lieutenant Davey joined the RNZAF in 1966. After 3 1/2 years with No 5 Squadron he was posted to instructional duties. He is now an A2 instructor on the staff of the Central Flying School. Flt Lt Davey was attached to RNZAF Base Te Rapa for duties with New Zealand Aerospace Industries Limited, Hamilton, for the period 19 April 1976 to 20 February 1977 as RNZAF Support Group Airtrainer Project Officer. During this time he was responsible inter alia for Airtrainer acceptance test flights and in addition was tasked with the evaluation of the spinning characteristics of each aircraft. The latter was a type development requirement and necessitated Flt Lt Davey spinning each aircraft a minimum of eight turns in each direction with several different entry and recovery techniques being used. The work done by this officer, involving nearly 20 hours of spinning trials, was inherently hazardous with a definite element of danger involved. It has, however, led to the development of a standard spin entry and recovery technique which should have major flight safety benefit during the coming years. The completion of the Airtrainer delivery programme was protracted due to production delays. Nevertheless, Flt Lt Davey made every effort to ensure delivery of the aircraft to Wigram by working long hours and the majority of weekends. This caused much disruption to his family life but was accepted without complaint. Flt Lt Davey’s professional approach to his duties and his insistence on the highest production standards from the manufacture has ensured delivery of the aircraft in the best possible condition of development and adjustment. It is to his credit that this was achieved without loss of cordial relations with management and staff of New Zealand Aerospace Industries Limited. His performance during this period has been exemplary and well beyond the bounds imposed by his duties
