Sad to see the passing of Bill Hopper. Apart from the great work he did in RNZAF publicity making promotional films, he was for many years the editor of the RSA Review

In accordance with Bryce's wishes a private family service has been held. A memorial service will be held at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Regan Street, Stratford on Wednesday, 5 October at 1pm. Here's an obituary from the Taranaki Daily News Central Taranaki community farewells Stratford's 'flying doctor' Bryce GlennieCATHERINE GROENESTEIN Last updated 14:19, October 10 2016 Dr Bryce Glennie and his wife Brenda, photographed at their 60th wedding anniversary. A man known as Stratford's flying doctor has died. Dr Bryce Glennie was 94. His enthusiasm for flying earned him the "flying doctor" nickname as he regularly flew to treat patients in Taranaki's eastern hill country in the days when the journey by car took several hours over winding, unsealed roads. On one occasion, he hitched a ride with an agricultural pilot to an emergency at Whangamomona, daughter Tina Glennie said. "Bob Shewry took him to out to Whangamomona sitting in the aircraft hopper because there was no other seat, and dropped him off at a rough agricultural airstrip on the farm," she said. Glennie was a GP in Stratford for 32 years, a Stratford Borough councillor, and a man who inspired his family to 'live curious", she said. Glennie trained as a doctor at Otago University when he returned from serving in the Solomon Islands with the RNZAF in WWII. He supported himself with holiday jobs that included working on a mutton chain, and packing tobacco, which was ironic as he later became one of New Zealand's earliest anti-smoking stalwarts, his daughter said. He graduated as a general practitioner in 1953, returning to Wellington where he married Brenda and in 1956 the couple shifted to Taranaki and settled in Stratford. Dr Glennie established his own general practice in Stratford but continued to work as an anaesthetist at New Plymouth and Stratford hospitals for many years. Throughout his career Glennie continued to learn, taking several sabbaticals from his practice for further study. He specialised in the care of mothers and infants. He introduced hip checks for babies and was the first to start using epidural anaesthetics for births. Tina remembers running across Stratford's golf course many times to fetch her father because he was needed at Avon Maternity Hospital. In 1988 he sold his practice to "retire", Tina said, but instead embarked on a new career as a locum GP, travelling around New Zealand and even overseas to give other doctors a much-needed break. He finally gave up his practicing certificate in 2005, when he was 83. "Dad served his community faithfully all these years. People still tell us how he delivered them, was their GP and then delivered their babies," Tina said. "He was not a social man but a community man, he did his bit for Stratford." Glennie was also active in community affairs. He was elected on to the Stratford Borough Council in 1967 and the rhododendron and azalea plantings he helped organise are still blooming each spring at the north entrance of the town. This first stint on council ended abruptly in July 1972, when he resigned after councillors refused to stop smoking during meetings. In 1977 he returned for one term. There had been moves afoot then to remove fluoride from the town's water supply and he wanted to make sure it stayed, said Tina. Outside of his work, Glennie's passions were his large garden, flying, golf and trains. A stroke five years ago brought a slower pace to life and he and wife Brenda moved to a villa at Maryann Rest Home in Stratford. He leaves behind Brenda, their five children, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. - Stuff www.stuff.co.nz/taranaki-daily-news/news/85062820/central-taranaki-community-farewells-stratfords-flying-doctor-bryce-glennie

Yes indeed, and his stories he told us of fitting the Allison into the boat True Jen and being its crew chief were great. I was hoping to get back up there to interview him again about all that history, sadly now it cannot be.

Message from WG CDR Kelvin Read
Tony was a top RNZAF Footballer who represented the RNZAF and Combined Services on many occasions. Tony was the key striker for the RNZAF when he played and knew his role on the park well. He was a big strong striker with a deadly header and an eye for the goal.
Both RNZAF Sports and RNZAF Football send their regards to family and friends as they remember the contribution Tony made to Sport in his time in the RNZAF.
