I'm sad to see Wally May has passed away. Wally was quite probably the last of No. 486 (NZ) Squadron's Tempest pilots. He served in the first half of WWII in the Merchant Navy on NZ ships, but after his ship struck a mine off Malta he decided to join the RAF, trained up and was posted to No. 486 (NZ) Squadron. He was not flying operationally for very long when he was shot down by flak and ended up in a German hospital for the rest of the war. Postwar he was an early topdressing pilot. A really neat old guy. Sad to see him go. MAY, Walter Wilson (Wally): Service No.NZ44799, Flt Sgt, RAF and RNZAF, WW2, and British Merchant Navy. Peacefully at Rhapsody Rest Home on Wednesday, 2 November 2016, aged 97 years. Loved father and father-in-law of Sandra and Rob McBrearty, Barry and Ailie, Alan and Donna, Keith and Nancy, Nigel, Karen and James Juffermans. Loved Poppy of Kelly, Veronika, Kelsey, Cameron, Finn, Paula-Lee, Daniel, Cory, Leah, Ryan, Dylan, and his great grandchildren. Loved brother of Jean, Helen, Frank, and Sis. Messages to 318 Carrington Street, New Plymouth 4310. A service for Wally will be held at Vospers Chapel, 257 Devon Street East, New Plymouth on Saturday, 5 November 2016 at 11am, then later at Awanui Services Cemetery. - See more at: deaths.taranakidailynews.co.nz/obituaries/taranaki-daily-news-nz/obituary.aspx?n=walter-may&pid=182275821&fhid=12709#sthash.JqMRrVtn.dpufFRIEND, Andrew David (Andy). I'm sure Wally told me he was more badly injured than just bruising when he was shot down. I have the impression he was in hospital for some time, I do recall he said the German doctors were replaced by US doctors as the hospital was liberated. So I am surprised if he made it back to the UK as early as May 1945 from what he told me.
