Tom Ramsay was a longtime guide at the RNZAF Museum. Grew up in Akaroa, where his father was a passenger bus operator on the route to Christchurch. Tom trained in NZ on Tiger Moths, thence to Canada in March 1942, where he completed his pilot training (at 7 SFTS) as multi-engine pilot at the end of July 1942. He then completed a flying instructor course (2 FIS) and subsequently served as instructor with an Oxford-equipped (RAF) SFTS from about Oct 1942. He converted to the Mosquito in Canada with 36 OTU (where he convinced the resident engineer officer that the Packard Merlin was NOT immune to icing up in flight, and also proved that his legs were too short to fully control the Canadian trainer version of the Mosquito on take off and landing, inadequate horizontal adjustment available for pupil's seat), and then moved to the UK in late March 1944. He completed his Mosquito operational training with 60 OTU between June and August 1944 (presumably also crewing up with his Navigator (W) at this time), and was posted to 23 Sqdn (RAF) for his one and only operational tour of duty August 1944 to end of Feb 1945. Subsequently he was posted to 54 OTU (almost certainly as an instructor for pilots under conversion). He returned to NZ in early August 1945, and to the reserve in early November. Tom reckoned the most unusual sights he saw in WW2 was a V-1 being launched from an He 111, and a V-2 launching in Holland, both seen from low altitude in his Mosquito and at night (but on different occasions). However he did not realize what he was looking at for some time, and only pieced it all together with hindsight. The V-2 took off right in front of Tom and his Nav (W) before disappearing through a layer of cloud. Tom also featured in a high speed crash landing in the UK after being hit by flak and loosing quite a chunk from one wing (some hasty experiments with minimum control speed provided information that the aircraft almost went out of control at about 130/140 MPH, which occasioned choice of aerodrome and the high speed approach). Luckily the aircraft remained controllable and it slithered to a halt after a very long slide on its belly (it was a write off). Tom was a classic extremely pleasant, helpful and unassuming gentleman to boot. David D

He was incarcerated in the Rangoon POW jail and endured severe hardships. With the abandonment of Rangoon by the Japanese in mid 1945, Eric was involved in the famous painting on the roof of the jail "Extract digit, Japs gone" He assisted getting a local airfield back into operations so that Dakotas could land and evacuate the POWs. A quietly spoken man of small stature, Eric was a long time member of the "Friends of the RNZAF Museum Group" based on the Kapiti coast. Some notes from Colin Hanson/Errol Martyn PoW files: OSBOLDSTONE, Flying Officer Eric JackNZ411617. Born Wanganui, 27 Dec 1919. RNZAF 10 Mar 1941 to 20 Nov 1945. Pilot. Shot down by Japanese ground fire, 14 Dec 1944 with 27 Sqn RAF (Beaufighter X, NV365/Y) on his 11th sortie, an armed reconnaissance of the Thazi - Mandalay railway. Eric Osboldstone recorded - "Took off 10 minutes late [at dawn] after putting one aircraft unserviceable and was airborne a few seconds after Sqn Ldr Harvey and followed him across the hills, over Mt Victoria, down the hillside and across the Irrawaddy a few miles above 'Chauk'. We split up at the river and I made for the south of Mt Poppa, and he to the north. On crossing the road in the foothills to the south of Poppa I was hit by accurate light and heavy machine or cannon fire. The starboard engine packed up and the propeller failed to feather. Being at low level and with a full load of petrol and ammunition I was forced to attempt a crash-landing. I dived at about 130 knots into a small clearing but the aircraft was wrecked. My navigator, Flight Sergeant Blundon, RAF, (No1800382) was killed. The aircraft burst into flames and I had to fight my way out with things getting very warm. I was picked up by the Burmese from a village 100 yards away and they were very hostile, but quietened a little when they saw I had no revolver. They searched me and carried me off in a bullock cart to a place called Yindaw, not far from Meiktila, and then waited for an hour when a Jap officer arrived and took me by truck to Meiktila. This was about midnight. I was interrogated on the 15th and that evening was on the way to Rangoon. I spent the day of the 16th at a transit camp at Toungoo and arrived in Rangoon on the 17th. I spent two days at the Jap Divisional HQ waiting for questioning, but was eventually asked a couple of questions on the 19th and then sent to Rangoon Central Jail - the 'prisoner of war camp'." I'm very sad to report this is one of our longtime WONZ Forum members 'Sniff' RIP mate. Air Force's Anthony Enright killed after being kicked by horse in rural ManawatūSHAUN EADE Last updated 14:29, January 25 2018 Anthony Enright, 60, died when a horse at his stud farm kicked him. The New Zealand Defence Force has named air force Squadron Leader Anthony Enright as the Manawatū man who died after being kicked by a horse. The 60-year-old, who died at his Beaconsfield home on Wednesday night, was described as a "friendly, down-to-earth and genuine man" who served the air force for more than 40 years. Enright and wife Catherine owned Kashami Arabian Stud since about 2012. Anthony Enright with wife Catherine. The couple recently moved to the Benson Rd address, about 20 kilometres north of Feilding. Emergency services were called to the house at 7.20pm on Wednesday, but Enright had already died of his injuries when the first ambulance crew arrived. A family spokesman at the house confirmed the incident. Anthony Enright died at the Benson Rd property where his family run Kashami Arabian Stud. "It was a horrendous accident. It was pretty bloody quick." He said family were gathering at the house and had requested space. Neighbours, all some distance from the property, said they knew little about what had happened aside from seeing emergency services drive past on Wednesday evening. A St John spokesman said the 60-year-old had already died by the time an ambulance arrived at the Beaconsfield property. Enright joined the air force in 1974 as a pilot flying Orion aircraft. At the time of his death, he was the manager of the tactical operations centre at Ohakea. The New Zealand Defence Force extended its sympathies to the family. "Squadron Leader Enright served New Zealand with pride. He will be remembered as a friendly, down-to-earth and genuine man, as well as one of outstanding ability. He will be sorely missed by his colleagues and all who knew him," a spokeswoman said. "The RNZAF, especially the Base Ohakea community, extends its deepest sympathies and support to his family and friends." Police were still making inquiries about the incident on Thursday. - Stuff www.stuff.co.nz/national/100864294/man-dead-after-after-being-kicked-by-a-horse-in-rural-manawat
