Peter Wheeler has just informed me that WWII Halifax Navigator Alan Whitelaw, NZ413719, passed away this morning at his home at Kerikeri Retirement Village, aged 101. He flew with No. 158 Squadron RAF during WWII.

Citation Distinguished Flying Cross (11 Oct 1943): [158 Sqn RAF (Halifax)] This officer’s operational career has been distinguished throughout by his technical skill as a navigator, infectious enthusiasm for operational flying and determination to guide his aircraft accurately to the target and back. He has participated in sorties against many of the most heavily defended targets in enemy territory. Fg Off Whitelaw flew at least 26 sorties with 158 Sqn, then instructed on 20 OTU RAF (Wellington).
