Very sad to see my old friend Bill Fitzharding-Jones has passed away. He was one of the original Safety And Surface workers, on the first ever trade course in 1949 after they combined three or four trades into our trade. He was responsible for painting the Mustangs when they came out of storage at Ardmore, and had a long career in the RNZAF. He then became one of the original hangar volunteers with the then Royal New Zealand Air Force Museum, looking after the safety equipment artifacts and painting side of things alongside the regular force S&S Corporal on the team. He was also in charge of the stored models. I also joined the RNZAF with his son Jeff, who was originally also S&S but switched to Aircraft Technician trade. RIP Bill.
FITZHARDING-JONES, William Desmond (Bill/Jack): F/Sgt R.N.Z.A.F. 72932 1949 - 1969. C.A.S. Commendation. 1929 - 2019 Loved husband of the late Claire. Dearly loved father and father-in-law of Helen and Peter, Ruth, Beryl and Ian, Diane and Hari, Jeff and Kathryn. Loved Grandad of his six grandchildren. Jack loved aviation and was a passionate supporter of the R.N.Z.A.F. Museum at Wigram. Messages to the Fitzharding-Jones Family c/- PO Box 79185, Christchurch 8446. The Funeral Service for Jack will be held at St Mark's Chapel, 14a Henry Wigram Drive, on Tuesday, January 22, at 11.00am.

DUNBAR Reg DFM RAF 638741 yesterday in Auckland.
Reg was one of our most respected veterans , and always a joy to meet and visit. He joined the RAF in 1939 as a wireless operator and was posted to 37 squadron in July 1940 . His first tour of 30 ops took him to Berlin and over the invasion barges. A second tour with 37 sq included ops over Greece and the desert. After 14 ops they were recalled to Uk and he was posted to 15 OTU where as an instructor he flew on two of the 1000 bomber raids. Not one to slow down he volunteered to transfer to 3017 Echelon Defiant Flight developing Mandrel and Moonshine special duty RCM , which morphed into 515 squadron and Reg completed 50 operational flights through to Feb 1944. A count of his log book shows 96 completed ops plus many DNCO due to engine problems or weather. To take a single engine , two man aircraft into the North Sea and transmit was rather brave as it seems that the Defiants gun wasnt employed as Reg was operating the jamming equipment. Reg spent the rest of the war as an instructor at AFU units and stayed on with the RAF postwar , retiring as a Wing Commander OC Cadet Forces west. An article about the Mandrel Defiants was in a recent issue of the "Aeroplane " and includes some comments from Reg. Always a staunch member of the NZBCA he will certainly be missed very much.

Chief of Air Staff Commendation (1974) (Abbreviated): For outstanding zeal and devotion to duty. Citation British Empire Medal (NY1980): Sergeant Schwabe joined the RNZAF in 1956 and was trained as an instrument fitter. Since August 1966 he has been employed in the Avionics Squadron at RNZAF Base Auckland and during this time has worked in the Inertial Navigation Bay, the Instrument Servicing Bay and the Electronic Test Equipment Section. Sgt Schwabe has continually striven to improve the standard of avionics maintenance, particularly by reviewing existing work methods in the search for better and more efficient techniques. By calculating and introducing the use of a Star Data Nomogram he was responsible for improving the method employed to validate the True North reference which is in turn used to calibrate Inertial Navigation equipment on Orion aircraft. He has also been responsible for devising a much more accurate and efficient method of calibrating the Andover compass-swing site, reducing the time taken for this operation from six to two days. In late 1978 and early 1979, Sgt Schwabe was involved in the RNZAF evaluation trials of ‘OMEGA’ navigation equipment which included the planning, installation, collection and analysis of data, from the trial fitments of four different makes of equipment to three different aircraft types. Much of this work was, of necessity, performed at short notice and during out of normal hours. Sgt Schwabe’s professionalism and dedicated approach ensured the overall success of the trials, and he has since spent much of his own time in planning for the production version of the installation. Sgt Schwabe is an extremely loyal, conscientious and dedicated serviceman who has devoted much personal time and effort to his duties. In his painstaking approach to complex problems he has shown initiative and professionalism. Errol

Sad news. Des Hyland was one of the Mosquito pilots who attended the Mosquito Dinner in 2012 as a special guest. He flew with No. 488 (NZ) Squadron and at that event I was able to seat him with two other former members of that squadron. Now they are all gone. Des was, I believe, the last No. 488 (NZ) Squadron member.

The following came through as an email from Lawrence Acket of the Catalina Society:
"It is with the deepest of sadness to inform members the passing of Mike Hodgkinson yesterday from an unexpected medical event.
Mike, a founding member of our society was also the most knowledgeable on world wide Catalinas second only to David Legg.
He had toured the Northern USA and Canada extensively capturing as many Catalinas and active waterbombers to have a extensive photographic record of his travels.
He had also amassed a large library of anything Catalina related from world periodicals and was collecting via ebay, a rare collection of post war civil Catalinas images, including never seen before pictures of our own PBY.
Mike was also one of the instigators of scheming the markings of PBY in French Markings. He commissioned a local artist to produce the alluring "Magnifique" nose art mermaid adding to the French Flair bring international aviation media attention.
Our aircraft's cabin has largely benefited from his silently sponsored enhancements from the decorative and hard wearing embroidered headrests to the "repairs" of passenger seat-belts to allow for more modern sized passengers to be secure without the need for extension seat-belts.
Mike was very generous to our organisation even when the commodity milk prices, which he relied on as a dairy farmer, was hitting an international lull.
We understand he would have turned 60 later this year.
Details of his service will be in the Waikato Times and NZ Hearld over the coming days.
God speed Mike.
Radial engines will always resonate in your memory."
