CHAFFEY Alastair Stronach, On February 18th, 2019 Suddenly but peacefully at home, Mead/ Te Pirita. Aged 85 years. Dearly loved husband, best friend and soulmate of Angie. Much loved father and father in law of Tonia, and Mike and Ang. Adored Grandad of Sam and Tom. In lieu of flowers donations to the Ashburton Aviation Museum would be appreciated and maybe left at the service. Messages to the Chaffey family c/-P O Box 472, Ashburton 7740.
This one took me by surprise, only finding out by chance. His funeral was held at the Ashburton Aviation Museum as he had volunteered there for nearly 30 years. Owner of Auster MK V ZK-AVH I first met Alastair in 1983 where I helped him acquire a replacement engine for his Auster........by buying AUH less the engine. AUH spent over a year sharing his hangar at his farm in Te Pirita near the Rakaia river. When I drove there most Saturdays to potter on the Auster he usually popped over to have a chat. Sometimes he would decide we should go up in his Auster and I repayed his generosity by helping him round the farm, so I got to help round up the odd mob of sheep and even got given the controls of a huge tractor and ploughed a field. Great fun for a city boy! He was a real gentleman and the only time I saw him slightly angry was when we had brought a mob of sheep into the house paddock and we retired into the house for lunch. When we came out we did a double take as the sheep were gone! He quickly looked at the main gate and went "That bloody dog! She's done it again!" The top dog decided she wasn't done herding so while we were in the house munching sandwiches, she was happily herding them out the gate, up a long driveway and out onto the road! Fortunately she decided to stop for a breather so they weren't halfway to Christchurch. There were close to 200 people I would say at the service. I flew in Charlie Draper's Auster along with two Cubs (one with Graham Bethel flying one for the first time I understand) and Alastair's ashes arrived in his Auster and at the ending of the service were flown home in it while a Mid Canterbury Aero Club Cherokee formation team performed a variation of the missing man formation. They flew overhead in a Vic of three and then returned with one missing form the Vic. RIP Alastair you are certainly going to be missed.
