A well known and nice guy - Wally Tarr.
John Claydon, who was the pilot on the trans - Antartic deal, spoke very well of him as did Ed Hillary, the expedition leader.

I knew Wally Tarr who was living in at Shelly Bay when I first went there as a brand new P/o! I think he also did a stint in the US because he brought back a very nice power boat back with him and on fine summer days used to take whoever was available for drives around the harbour.

Wally Tarr used to live at one stage in Thames, my own home town, and used to visit his parents there back in the late 1950's and early 1960's when I was at school. The family house was in Grey St., directly opposite the northern entrance to Thames South School. He was a local hero to my younger brother and I then, and we did meet him briefly a couple of times outside the house. We lived just a few doors around the corner in Rolleston St and were often tearing around the block on our trolleys, skates or bikes. When Wally was in Thames in those days, the local Thames Star always wrote him up well. When I was in the RNZAF later, I was a member of the NZ Antarctic Society for several years and followed all the goings on down at the ice with intense interest. Insofar as I recall, I never met him nor was on the same base during my service. It is possible my younger brother may have contacted him in Thames during his retirement.

I have just learned that Colin Hanson, author of By Such Deeds - Honours and Awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923-1999 died last evening. Colin had been in poor health in the last few years. His end was sudden but peaceful, I'm told.
Colin was a good friend of mine for over 20 years and made a tremendous contribution to my For Your Tomorrow trilogy and other works during that time. He will be greatly missed by myself and many others, but his magnificent By Such Deeds volume will stand as a permament memorial to him.
HANSON, Group Captain Colin Morris, OBE. NZ4217055 & J70181; Born Invercargill, 8 Sep 1924; RNZAF 23 Dec 1942 to 6 Mar 1946 & 19 Sep 1947 to 9 Sep 1977; Navigator/Wireless, Fighter Controller, Navigator/Bomb Aimer. Citation Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (NY1974): Wing Commander Hanson joined the RNZAF in December 1942 and trained as a wireless operator and a navigator in Canada before being posted to the United Kingdom for service on Mosquito aircraft. His skill as a navigator was amply demonstrated in his tours on the RNZAF’s bomber squadrons, where he was the navigation leader on No 75 (Mosquito) in New Zealand and No 75 (Canberra) in Malaya. Later in his career he commanded the Airmen Cadet School with distinction. However, he has shown a particular ability and interest in intelligence work and for much of his career has served in intelligence or allied appointments. Currently he holds the senior intelligence appointment of Director of Service Intelligence in Defence Headquarters. It is in this important post that Wing Commander Hanson has recently given evidence of his capabilities, operating in an international and politically sensitive environment with astuteness and sound judgement. Over the past two years as New Zealand’s representative he has enhanced significantly New Zealand’s reputation and standing in the international forums of the intelligence community. Furthermore, his devotion to duty and his professional abilities have been instrumental in bringing his Directorate to a high state of effectiveness. This was well tested during the period of recent French nuclear tests, when his department made a significant contribution to the Government’s objectives. His skill, experience and dedication to his work in his many appointments are such as to make him worthy of special recognition. Also served as a Fighter Controller and OC the Ground Control Interception radar unit at RNZAF Ohakea, 1954-1957 carrying out over 1,100 radar interceptions during the training of RNZAF fighter pilots. A report dated Sep 1957, written when the unit was closed, states in part - “Flt Lt Hanson has been the sole controller at Ohakea....He has been instrumental in effecting the recovery of a number of aircraft which would otherwise have been lost.”

I have just heard that Don Nairn of Masterton has passed away, aged 92. His funeral was today I believe.
Very sad, I liked Don a lot, and he was truly a national hero in my eyes, for the work he did with the Fleet Air Arm in the USA in developing aircraft, particularly the Corsair. if you have not yet read his book, Gold Wings and Webbed Feet, I highly recommend you do. RIP Don.
