I am very sad to hear from Norm Empson's circular that Geoffrey Bentley has passed away. Like Colin Hanson very recently, Geoff's death is a huge loss to the recording of RNZAF history. I had the great pleasure of talking and corrseponding with Geoff a few years back, as he served on one of the squadrons I have been writing about, and I fouind him such a lovely man, and so generous and knowledgable. he has contributed so much over the years in his writing of RNZAF history and events, both as a war correspondenet and PRO, and in his super books RNZAF: A Short History, and Portrait of an Air Force.
Here is the details from Norm:

Glen Turner has just advised that Geoff Highet, WWII pacific fighter pilot, a member of 14 Sqn J Force and later CO of 75 Squadron (Canberras) in Singapore and then Air New Zealand DC8 pilot, has passed away. No details of funeral as yet.
Glen and I spent a couple of very enjoyable hours (and whiskeys!) with Geoff a few years ago. He had an amazing photo/scrap book collection of his RNZAF career. I hope it all ends up in the RNZAF Museum now that he has gone.

A sad one, Geoff Highet was one of the RNZAF's few remaining P-40 combat pilots. I met him a few years ago, and found him to have a very detailed memory of events. He told me a couple of stories about his P-40 days in the Pacific and also about his work in England during the RNZAF's acquisition of the Canberras. A fascinating man. Sadly he was then ill and I was unable to record any of the stories, although he'd been willing to do so at a later date, it never worked out.

NZ42402 & 70133; Born Dunedin, 16 Nov 1923; RNZAF 11 Jan 1942 to 23 Sep 1945 & 6 Jan 1947 to 4 Aug 1964; Pilot. Hon Aide-de-Camp to HE the Governor-General 1 Jul 1955 to 20 Jun 1956. Citation Distinguished Flying Cross (Imm) (11 Apr 1944): [17 Sqn RNZAF (Kittyhawk)] Two enemy aircraft were destroyed and a third probably destroyed, by this pilot in a single action over Rabaul on 24th December, 1943, in which he displayed extraordinary skill and courage against heavy odds. His coolness, ability and disregard of his own safety have been of the highest standard, and were again proved when on 7th January, 1944, he exposed himself to attack to shoot down another enemy aircraft which was engaging one of Flying Officer Highet’s formation. Flying Officer Highet has distinguished himself on aerial combat from Kahili to Rabaul and has become a highly successful leader. Completed three tours with 17 Sqn followed by two as a Flt Cdr with 25 Sqn RNZAF (Corsair). Citation Air Force Cross (CL1953): Not available. However, his service in the period prior to this award gives some background. In 1952, Flight Lieutenant Highet was serving as an instructor on Meteors at RAF Central Flying School when he was returned to Ohakea, in Nov 1952, to become the first jet instructor in the RNZAF. Prior to his return he was attached to RAF Germany for tactical experience. It was at this time when he had a mid-air collision in a Vampire, only regaining and maintaining control of his aircraft with extreme difficulty. At Ohakea he was responsible for pilot conversion training onto Vampires and, additionally, the test-flying of Vampires as they came off the Hobsonville assembly line. Citation Bar to Air Force Cross (10 Jun 1961): Not available. This award was made by the RAF for distinguished service as CO of NZ’s first Canberra jet bomber squadron (75 Sqn RNZAF) at RAF Tengah, Singapore, 1958-1961. On 28 Jan 1948, whilst serving with BCOF at Bofu, Japan, the engine of his 14 Sqn RNZAF Corsair failed on take-off. The aircraft force-landed and overturned. Trapped in the cockpit, upside down, a crane was used to lift the aircraft but at the critical moment the strops broke and the aircraft again fell upside down. Under the guidance of W/O C R (Nick) Carter (qv) all available manpower was used to physically lift the aircraft and Flt Lt J R Claydon (qv) crawled underneath, broke the canopy and released the seat harness straps. Flt Lt Highet fell out of the aircraft, hitting his head for the third time. CO 75 Sqn RNZAF (Vampire) Apr-May 1954. CO 75 Sqn RNZAF (Canberra) Jul 1958-Jan 1961. SMITH, Flight Lieutenant Leicester George, DFC. NZ414352 & 130073; Born Rangiora, 27 Mar 1919; RNZAF 27 Jul 1941 to 30 Oct 1945, Res. to 1 Dec 1948, TAF to 1 Mar 1952, Res. to 1 Mar 1964; Pilot. Citation Distinguished Flying Cross (17 Jul 1945): [128 Sqn RAF (Mosquito) - LNSF] This officer has completed numerous operations against the enemy, in the course of which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty. On 27 Mar 1945, when returning from a raid on Berlin, Flt Lt Smith was in collision with another Mosquito at 26,000 feet over the German/Dutch border. He returned to England on one motor but the other aircraft failed to return. He flew 44 sorties with 128 Sqn. In 2003 Smith privately published a 184-page memoir of his wartime experiences titled Pathfinder – wings in a crowded sky. Errol
