Rest well Des. I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon with him recently, and really enjoyed his company - a real gentleman, a memory sharp as a knife, and a great sense of humour. Thanks Des, we will miss you.

J L (Jock) Turner was another of the RNZAF Museum guides; I had many talks with him. One of his interests (apart from his poetry!) was his great fascination with the "Gloria Lyons" Kittyhawks. He met and talked with the said lady (the human one that is) who by this time was living in Australia; she died about 15 or 20 years ago. The medical condition which resulted in her name being applied to three P-40s and one F4U made her entire life very difficult and painful, but she went on to lead a very full life. Jock's career in the wartime RNZAF was a rather frustrating one, having trained as a pilot at Wigram May - Sept 1944 on Oxfords, Course 51A, graduated as Sgt pilot, then posted to Reserve in October because of glut of multi-engine pilots. In March 1945 he was recalled from Reserve for refresher and retraining as single-egine pilot with Course 58A at Wigram. He was then posted to the Ardmore Maintenance Wing but actually carried out ground duties at the old Seagrove station as a range assistant on the bombing range set up there for the Corsair squadrons from Ardmore. This was the really frustrating part for Jock (and the other pilots allocated to these duties), to see these pilots flying around in what Jock and his mates had hoped to be flying, but never got the chance. Many of the these Corsair pilots had come through on later Woodborne courses long after Jock had completed his original Oxford training. Jock also had an older brother (Jim) in the wartime RNZAF who served (as Sgt Pilot, later commissioned) as a staff pilot, then instructor, whose whole career was spent in NZ. After the war, Jock had a more fruitful career as a school teacher, as did so many others. Blue skies and soft landings Jock. David D

I'm unable to confirm that he was ever a member of the RNZAF during the war. Perhaps, given the reference to his rank as that of private, Royal New Zealand Artillery was meant instead of the article's Royal New Zealand Air Force. Errol

Yeah, I was wondering about the rank of private in the RNZAF.
That's why I posted it in this group for more knowlegable persons to look at.
I thought perhaps he was in the home guard or something, possibly guarding RNZAF installations.

The Home Guard was affiliated only with the Army.
Even if a Home Guard was posted anywhere near an RNZAF installation he'd still have been a Home Guard, not RNZAF. The RNZAF had its own version of the Home Guard, the Aerodrome Defence Units. They had RNZAF ranks as they were mostly aircrew trainees.

More likely he was NZ Army (possibly "Regulars" (wartime only) or more likely the Territorials), who manned the main Anti-Aircraft weapons at RNZAF aerodromes, as was the case in the UK, etc. The RNZAF had no heavy weapons for A/A defence in WW2, just rifles and light machine guns (0.303", 0.300" for most part), although during the withdrawal from Singapore, Malaya, Dutch East Indies, etc, RNZAF personnel sometimes ended up assisiting in manning the ship's guns. Yes a very good point, he may well have been an anti-aircraft gunner on an RNZAF base.
