I just received this news from Graeme Proffitt: I wish to advise of the death of my father, Alan Proffitt. Dad died Saturday 18 January 2014 in Wellington at the good old age of 90. He is survived by my mother, Beatrice Margaret (Peggy) Proffitt, four of their five children, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His funeral is to be at 2:30 pm Friday 24 January, at Old St Pauls, Mulgrave Street, Wellington. He left notes of his WWII service... This included service in the Southwest Pacific (Solomon Islands, Bougainville, etc) flying F4U-1D Corsairs. Aircraft flown include various Tiger Moths, Harvards (including one I believe is now based at Hood Aerodrome), P40 Kittyhawks, Corsairs and Grumman Avengers. Territorial Army (called up): 10 January 1942 -8 January 1943. (364 days) Units: January -April 1942: 2 Bn. the Wellington Regiment at Waiouru, Army School (Trentham) & Booth's Farm, Carterton. April 1942 -January 1943: 22 Field Company NZ Engineers at Taratahi Racecourse, Carterton & Woodville Racecourse, Woodville. Final rank: Lance corporal. Army service number: Forgotten. RNZAF: 9 January 1943 -24 September 1945. (2 years 258 days) RNZAF Service Number NZ43949 Units: January -June 1943: Aerodrome defence and ground training at Omaka & Woodbourne (Blenheim) & Hood (Masterton). June -August 1943 Aircrew ITW at Rotorua (selected for pilot). August -October 1943:- Pilots' course 44, EFTS at Ashburton. October 1943 -'March 1944:- ITS Wigram briefly then ITS & ATS for single engine "wings" training at 2 SFTS , Woodbourne. March -April 1944:- Fighter OTU at Ohakea. April 1944 joined 18 F Squadron at Ardmore thence to operations in SW Pacific Theatre. July 1944 joined 22 F Squadron at Ardmore and thence again to Sowespac. December 1944 transferred to aircrew pool, Hobsonville. January 1945 joined Utility Flight at Ardmore. September 1945: War ended; transferred to Aircrew Reserve. September 1952 received discharge certificate. Final rank: Warrant Officer from August 1945. Total service: Army + RNZAF: 3 years 257 days. Dad was the pilot involved in the following on www.adf-serials.com.au/nz-serials/nzcorsair.htm: NZ5229 4851 F4U-1 56428 Shipped from USA on 06 March 1944 aboard "USS Kadashan Bay". Assembled in Espiritu Santo and BOC Unit 60 on 23 March 1944. Issued to No.18 Fighter Squadron, Guadalcanal on 18 May 1944. Coded "E". To No.22 Squadron on 21 July 1944. To No.21 Squadron by October 1944. Landed heavily and swerved off runway at Piva when returning from a strike on 24 October 1944. Flight Sergeant A. Proffitt injured. Aircraft written off books at Bougainville. Officially recorded as a heavy landing, Dad always said it was a result of a partially seized brake on one side which cause the aircraft to swing on landing and “ground loop”. According to Dad, the need to use the brakes to swing the aircraft from side to side during taxiing, so as to see past the long, high nose of the Corsair, meant the disc brakes got very hot and could distort, not to be discovered until landing later. That’s his story and he is sticking to it! He was always highly peeved that the official story was different. With respect to other details. He was born 26 July 1923 and attended Napier Boys High School 1937-1940. Apart from his nearly four years of war service he spent his entire working life with the Ministry of Works and Development, or its predecessors. He joined the Public Works Department in Wellington from school, then was in the Army and Air Force for the next four years. On leaving the Air Force he went back to the PWD and then got a rehabilitation bursary to study Civil Engineering at Canterbury University College (now Canterbury University). He met mum at university. He went back to the Ministry of Works at the end of 1949, initially in Wellington and then, in 1954, Mangakino, where he was involved in Maraetai, Whakamaru, Atiamuri, Ohakuri and Aratiatia power projects. From Mangakino we moved to Dunedin where he was involved in roading, and then moved to Wellington in 1965, initially Head Office and then Wellington District Office, where he was successively District Highways Engineer, District Civil Engineer (including oversight of the design and construction of the Wellington Urban Motorway and Terrace Tunnel) and finally District Commissioner of Works, responsible for the whole of the district office’s operations covering Wellington, the Wairarapa, Marlborough and Nelson. Following retirement in 1983 (compulsory retirement at 60, back then!), he did some consulting and served on the Tawa Borough Council, where he chaired the Works Committee. Regards Graeme Proffitt

Hi to all. One name that appears to have slipped through the cracks! I've only just received further details to add to the death notice.
Marris, John Stone DFC NZ425796 RNZAF WW2. No.50 and No.617 Squadron. Passed away peacefully at Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village, Stoke, Nelson on November 26, 2013 aged 90 years. Much loved husband of the late Vivienne for 60 years. Loved father and father in law of Lorraine and Alan Field (Auckland), Richard and Ruth (New Plymouth), Alistair and Fiona (Christchurch). Loved granddad of all his grand and great grand children.
From ‘By Such Deeds’ MARRIS, Flying Officer John Stone, DFC. NZ425796; Born Nelson, 31 Mar 1923; RNZAF 30 May 1942 to 15 Sep 1946; Pilot. Citation Distinguished Flying Cross (25 May 1945): 50 Sqn RAF (Lancaster). Flying Officer Marris has completed many missions against such targets as Munich, Politz, Nuremberg and Brunswick. Throughout, he has maintained a very high standard of captaincy and has shown outstanding enthusiasm for his duties. In October, 1944, while attacking Flushing, he was obliged to make two runs over the target owing to poor visibility. On the second run his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire which put one engine out of action and set it on fire. In spite of this Flying Officer Marris made yet another bombing run and successfully pressed home his attack before the fire was extinguished. This officer's conduct at all times has been of the highest order, and his unfailing determination combined with cheerful enthusiasm has made him an outstanding captain, which is reflected in the efficiency of his crew. Fg Off Marris flew at least 29 sorties with 50 Sqn.
John was my Mother's cousin, and I remember him from my childhood visits to his farm in Nelson as one of those quiet achievers.
His usual 'mount' in No.50 Squadron was Lancaster III LM629 coded VN 0. Somewhere in my files I also have a serial and code for one of his No.617 Squadron aircraft, but can't put my hands on it at the present time. John noted to me in a letter several years ago, that LM629 had flown nearly 70 sorties when it was shot down shortly after he had left 50 Squadron.

Oh no, I had tried to find Alby for my GR Squadron research and came to the conclusion he was no longer around. I had no idea he was living as close as Morrinsville. Sad. I'd have loved to have talked with him and seen his logbook.
His Service Number was actually NZ392076. I'm not sure where they got the 26 in there from.

Only just saw the very sad news that Lolie Reeves passed away last month. Not sure if she and Selwyn were still regular visitors to the Mess as I haven't been back to Auckland since I got out at the end of 2001. Lolie was like a mother to everyone, looking after them if they were getting too drunk, slapping your hand if you were seen taking too many bar snacks. She was always there supporting the Mess. RIP Lolie
