I have just been informed that Ron Reid passed away at 3.00am this morning in Tauranga hospital. A true understated hero, Ron flew Vildebeests and Albacores with No. 36 Squadron RAF in Singapore and then Java. He was the last living kiwi who took part in the daring and disastrous Endau Raid, among many other raids. The Endau Raid was a daylight attack against a Japanese invasion fleet headed for Endau, Malaya. The bombers were Vildebeests and Albacore, their escorts were Buffaloes. Many of the aircraft in the two waves were shot down, and the fleet got through regardless.
Ron was captured in the Dutch East Indies and spent over three years building a railroad for the Japanese. He was a remarkable man. RIP
