These come from John "Trees" Forrest.
Regret to advise the passing of FLTLT (RTD) Murray Muir Lambert SMITH G74181 RNZAF 7 January 1957 to 31 July 1992 on 1 May 2014. Murray was one of the last of NCO Pilots and (not too sure here but FLT LT Mike Ward is checking this out), I think he was a SGT Pilot with the last of the RNZAF Mustangs ? His last appointment in the RNZAF was as NZ Cadet Forces Northern Area Advisory Officer. Funeral will be at Schnapper Rock on Tuesday – details to be advised along with an address for messages.

Fond memories of Dawn from the Ohakea Air Movements, she was a larger than life personality. I can remember clearly being in a small group about to go out socialising from Bulls one evening. Unfortunately I was in uniform at the time. Dawn very kindly loaned me some of her clothing. The next morning I was flying out on SATS but woke a little late. I must admit I was also a little surprised to see the dress, necklace and wig I was wearing, I did have time to remove them. The make-up was another matter, - nevermind..
Anyway here I was rushing into Air Movements in parts of my 'parade' uniform. Complete with eye-liner, lipstick and what ever else she had helpfully applied less than 10 hours earlier. No rank insignia or hat at this stage.
Dawn, being a Fijian, told things how they were. Yes, I knew I was a mess... and thanks it was nice to know where my uniform was. (Whose fault was it that I looked a shambles ?). Anyway she checked me in for the flight and said I had time to spruce up. By now everyone in the lounge had heard and was having a laugh at my expense. A few minutes later a NCO arrived and walked in with my uniform... looking very smart in his facial make up as well !!
Good times Dawn. Thanks for the memories and sorry to hear of your passing. I am sure she would have had many friends on this forum. Sad..

Gordon Jennings was a friend of my late Great Uncle Ted Homewood, they lived in the same retirement complex, and Uncle Ted introduced Gordon to me. Gordon spent a long period in WWII flying as an instructor on Oxfords which he absolutely loved, and then in 1945 he was sent to a Fighter OTU and ended up converting to the Corsair. He was posted to No. 14 Squadron and was on their final tour in WWII, plus he was sent to Japan in the first lot of No. 14 (Occupational) Squadron.
Gordon is the only pilot I ever met who absolutely HATED the Corsair. After a couple of years of flying Oxfords he found it too bit, powerful and dangerous, and he was never comfortable in it. It got to the point that he'd complained so much in Japan the CO finally took him off flying duties, much to his delight, and he was made the RNZAF Liaison in Tokyo for the rest of his tour up there.
A really nice chap. It's sad to lose him.

Dave, I guess Gordon Jennings just spent too long on Oxfords. This aircraft was deliberately designed to be JUST powerful enough and sufficently demanding of a pilot to prepare them for flying heavy aircraft at high weights under difficult conditions. As you intimate, every WW2 pilot I have spoken or corresponded with absolutely fell in love with the Corsair, but NEVER on first acquaintance, with sheer terror being the intial reaction! David D

Yes, well Gordon didn't like the aircraft when he flew it in combat on that last wartime tour of No. 14 Squadron and he never liked it any better when he was flying them in peacetime, so i guess it's just a personal choice thing. I will add that everyone I have ever spoke with who instructed on the Oxford seemed to really love them as an aircraft. It's such a shame there are none flying today.

From the Dominion Post, Tuesday, May 13, 2014.
Deaths :
"Dacombe-Bird, Lawrence William Sydney (Bill).
Passed unexpectedly but peacefully surrounded by his family on 10 May, 2014, in his 85th year..."
Bill Dacombe-Bird was a part-time instructor at the Wgton Aero Club back in the days. I remember getting my night flying rating under Bill's tutelage in a Victa 100.
If I recall correctly Bill worked in Wellington Tower and I have a vague idea that he was ex-RAF.
I shall remember him as a fine flying instructor and a really nice bloke.
I hope someone who knew him better than I did can expand a little on his aviation career.

Come in, Chinapilot
I also flew with Bill at the Wellington AC back in the late 60s and agree entirely with Angelsonefive. Lovely bloke, very cool/calm/collected instructor. Helped me with CPL subjects, and I last flew with him on Oct 4th 1969 at which stage he instructed alongside Harry Jenkins at PP.
IIRC Bill had been an RAF Hunter pilot? He manned Wellington Information on 118.5 in those days, and had a very distinctive voice with the most polished English Public School accent.
Fly on, Bill
