This chap seems to have been one of the last of the pre-war RNZAF members? There cannot be many more left alive sadly NYE, Brian Elliot MBE JP Retired. Service No’s 38197 & 70408 RNZAF WW2. On November 3rd 2014 at Home, aged 96, beloved soulmate of Enid and much loved father and father in law of Claire, Frances and Allan, Wendy and Desly, Katherine and Gerald. Proud and loving grandfather of 11 and great grandfather of 8. A celebration of Brian’s life will be held on Friday 7th November 2014 at 11am at St Michael and All Angels Church in Gt North Rd Henderson From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999 : NYE, Warrant Officer Brian Elliott, MBE. NZ38197 & 70408; Born Wellington, 22 Feb 1918; RNZAF 4 May 1938 to 4 May 1968; Fabric Worker, Flight Mechanic, Fitter IIE, then Engineer. Citation Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (NY1965): Warrant Officer Nye, who enlisted 25 years ago [sic], has given loyal and devoted service during the whole period of his association with the RNZAF. As a technical flight sergeant with Number 75 Squadron in Malaya he supervised the work of servicing of aircraft in a commendable manner. When Canberra aircraft were introduced into the RNZAF he personally designed and supervised the construction of an hydraulic circuitry training aid which has been of considerable value in instructing aircrew on the hydraulic operation of components of the Canberra aircraft. For a period of ten months while he was at Ohakea, Warrant Officer Nye served as the engineering officer of Number 42 Squadron, at a period when the Squadron was involved in the air transportation of a large number of VIPs including the King and Queen of Thailand and all members of the Royal Party. The very high level of serviceability of the squadron’s aircraft throughout this period was due in large measure to Warrant Officer Nye’s efforts. During the past year Warrant Officer Nye has carried out the tasks of Technical Adjutant in addition to his normal duties of Warrant Officer in charge of the Technical Control Section. He has also filled the appointment of Chairman, Mess Committee of the Sergeant’s Mess and is currently chairman of the local school committee as well. In addition to these tasks he performed outstanding service in preparation of Air Force Day 1964 as the member responsible for the provision of all public amenities including first-aid facilities and public conveniences. The work load placed upon him during the period was far greater than that carried by most other station members, yet so excellent were the facilities provided that they were universally acclaimed by all visitors on that occasion. As a result the image of the Air Force in the public eye has been boosted considerably. Warrant Officer Nye’s splendid record of loyal and devoted service, a great deal of which has been performed in his available leisure time out of normal working hours, is deserving of high praise. Member RNZAF Contingent London Victory Parade 8 Jun 1946. Errol

Just received this:
SQN LDR (RTD) Noel William BEALE Y77279 GD (P) RNZAF 20 Jan 1954 to 18 Feb 1975 and 31 Oct 85 to 30 Sep 92.
I attended his funeral which was held yesterday at Dils Funeral Services, Albany ,Auckland.
Noel died on Wednesday 12 November aged 77 . He did not recover from surgery for a burst gall bladder. The death notice in the Herald did not contain any reference to his airforce sevice so I spoke with his family about this and it was an oversight on their part.
Noel and I joined as boy entrants in 1954 and subsequently went through radar mech/fitter training together. He remustered in the late 1950 or early 60s to pilot and served on 5 sqn flying Sunderlands and did a tour in Fiji. I think he was on P3s for a while and later he was at NATS Wigram as a line staff pilot flying Devons for the nav and signaller trainees. He retired in the late 70s ( I think) but may have rejoined later for a short period . He retired as a Sqn Ldr.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Brian Gilbert
