Sad to see John Claydon's passing. A nice person and a wonderful RNZAF history. John was a family friend - a fishing, hunting and flying buddy of my dad - and I remember as a kid being super impressed with his stories. He enlisted back in about 1936 ( with another interesting fellow - Jack Hardy from Blenheim ) and served as an airman at Wigram including a stint 'picking up rocks' at Birdlings Flat for his ( incorrect as it turned out ) involvement in a fatal crash. He subsequently became a pilot and served on Corsairs in the Pacific ( no kills he said, but lots of Japs bombed ) and then in J Force in Japan post war, also on Corsairs. He was also the senior pilot on the 1957 Trans Antartic Crossing and served in the RNZAF up thru 1965 I believe. A great hunter, fisherman and mountain climber as well.
Some photos I found on the internet.
That's John next to Ed Hillary. John in flying overalls.

That photo of the three Antarctic aircraft together is a classic. I thought the Otter was not bought on charge until after the Beaver was lost, so assume that in this shot, the Otter is still in RAF markings.

I assumed it was an RAF Otter? It will be an RAF or RAAF Otter - the RNZAF one never made it to the ice...

The RAF Otter XL710 was the one sold to the RNZAF, and, yes, Bruce, never made it to the ice. It arrived in a C124, I believe. www.vaq34.com/vxe6/otter.htm

Are we sure that the Otter photo is in Antarctica? Could it have been at one of the training exercises on the glaciers in the alps?

Did the RAF or RAAF bring their Otter to the Alps though? Our Beaver crashed in January 1960 and our Otter was purchased in August 1960 to replace it.
