To top off what has been a very sad week for the ex RNZAF family, this morning I learnt of the sudden passing of F/S (RTD) John Joseph (Johnny) GOMEZ D91267 AVTECH RNZAF 10 April 1985 to 28 August 2011. Tragically Johnny's wife (Jane) is the sister of WO Mike Cocker's wife. Both sisters have lost their dear husbands within days of each other. Johnny was down at Blenheim for Mike's funeral when he passed away suddenly yesterday. I worked with Johnny at Ohakea and he served on 75 Sqn for some years. He was the nicest bloke you would ever meet and gone far too young. Ake Ake Kia Kaha.

Not directly Service related, but today I attended the funeral of Ellen Erskine, widow of the late Derek who has been mentioned many times on this Board.
Derek was English, Ellen Canadian, and they met while he was training at Calgary EFTS. After the War he brought her to England where they married and eventually followed other family to NZ. He later gained a CPL and topdressed with Airwork starting on Tigers and finishing on Beaver BFO, then was CFI of the Nelson Aero Club for a time before going to Aerial Farming on the Ceres then back to Beavers with Fieldair in Dannevirke

Thanks for this information, Brian. Noel was my first cousin and I only just found out he had passed away. Seemingly in the moment of grief extended family such as cousins, etc who don't trawl the BDM column of the papers - and would have liked to attend the service if they had known - were not notified, and so missed the service. Noel also mentioned to me that he, and Uncle Bud, and my father, were all serving in the Air Force in Auckland at the same time, so it was "all in the family".

This one has come through in Norm Empson's circular email:
"I’m not sure if anyone in the Wellington “Scene” has mentioned to you the appearance of Dick’s death notice in today’s Dom-Post. It basically reads:
GREENBANK Richard John (Dick) – Peacefully after a long brave journey with cancer – etc etc. Dick as you’ll recall was a Ground Radio Fitter who spent most of his time at Shelly Bay and was employed in MSC back in the early to mid 1960’s. Amongst the many of Dick’s hobbies was “hotting-up” and modifying cars, in particular Mini’s, he was also a ham radio operator and a hell of a good mate. I think he did his 8 years and then took a job with Zip Industries out in the Hutt Valley"
