Some more on these two gents, from Colin Hanson's By Such Deeds: TRINGHAM, Group Captain Arthur Gilbert, OBE. NZ46724 & R71200; Born Napier, 5 Jul 1927; RNZAF 26 Apr 1946 to 5 Dec 1980; Supply. Citation Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (QB1979): Group Captain Tringham enlisted in the RNZAF in 1946, and saw service as an airman in Japan. He was commissioned in 1954 and has since served in a variety of appointments on Bases, with the Defence Liaison Staff in Australia, and in Defence HQ. In August 1976 he was promoted to his present rank and appointed to his current post as Deputy Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Support) Branch. He is now the senior supply specialist in the RNZAF. Gp Capt Tringham’s service has been characterised by his thorough specialist knowledge, his pleasant but business-like approach, and his strong motivation to achieve the tasks at hand. In his present post, and in other senior appointments held since 1970, he has faced many difficulties stemming from the reorganisation of supply services on a unified Defence basis, and the introduction of a number of new major equipments. Through his guidance and example, and his own sustained hard work, the effects of these problems have been minimised and smooth-running supply systems have been established. His devotion to the Service has however not prevented him from becoming involved in local community affairs, and Scouting, his Church, bowling and Rotary, have all benefited from his willingness to participate and work hard in the interests of the group. Gp Capt Tringham’s personal qualities, professionalism, devotion to duty and record of service both in the RNZAF and his local community has been outstanding.HICKSON, Flight Lieutenant William Henry, (pff). GSH (RTD) Tiri Hemi MANAHI W92871 formerly Airmovements Ohakea RNZAF 1 Feb 1988 to 12 Oct 2003. Terry was a very interesting chap - he was a former Ag pilot with many thousands of hours under his belt and he also flew Mustangs in the TAF in his early days so must have had another rank before he became a GSH. He was a very quiet, unassuming and all round nice guy. He ran the Ohakea Engineering Club for a while when he first started in 1988 before moving to airmovements so he could be around aircraft which he loved so much. RIP Teri.

ROACH, Olive Adlaide (Jan). (formerly Hyde) ( RNZAF N0 2911 Woman's Auxiliary Leader WW11) Just a small point, but her rank should read Leading Aircraftwoman. There was no such rank as Woman's Auxiliary Leader. Errol

The rank in WWII was abbreviated as W.A.L., so what did it stand for? i didn't write what was above, that is what was in the Herald. But I thought that Woman's Auxiliary leader was what it stood for too in the WAAF ranks. I have been told by WAAF's that the ranks went:
WA2 - Womens' Auxilliary 2 - equivalent of AC2 WA1 - Womens' Auxilliary 1 - equivalent of AC1 WAL - Womens' Auxilliary Leader - equivalent of Leading Aircraftman
Is that incorrect?

I have just seen in today's Cambridge Edition newspaper the death notice of Cambridge airman Ian James, who flew in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm in WWII, and was the brother of the late Ossie James. He was training at Bunker Hill when the war ended. Some of you may have met him in May at our Forum Meet and Veterans Day here in Cambridge, he was the chap on two walking sticks. Here's a copy of the death notice:
JAMES, Ian Wilson (S. No. 455071, Fleet Air Arm). - Died peacfully at home, on 17th September, 2011: in his 90th year. Dearly loved husband and friend of Janet (Jan). Devoted father and father-in-law of Rodney, Douglas and Janette, Bruce and Sally, Peter and Sarah, Andrew and Fiona. Loved grandad of Daniel and Andrea, Stacey and Renee; Ross, and Mark; Morgan, Hannah, Mack, and Pheobe: Abbey, Harry, Tim and Bella: Briana, and Jessica. Great-grandfather of four children. - Ian's funeral will be held at Trinity St Paul's Union Parish Church, Queen Street, Cambridge, today, Wednesday 21st of September, 2011, at 2.00pm, followed by private cremation.
