Sweetman, Harvey Nelson
A squadron leader who served in the Royal Air Force with the 486 (NZ) Squadron during World War II has died.
Harvey Nelson Sweetman, from Matamata, was born in 1921 and joined the RNZAF in April 1940.
He died on January 15, aged 94.

"After his conversion to Spitfires he was posted to 234 Squadron in February 1941. Harvey then transferred to be one of the original members of the 485 (NZ Squadrons when it formed in March 1941."
He won his first victory over enemy aircraft on August 29, 1941 by destroying a German aircraft followed by another on 18 September.
The 485 Squadron took part in operations against the battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. in 1942.
"In April 1943 he shared a victory by destroying a FW 190 and a week later, hit by a flak on Le Havre, he managed to return to England and crashed in a field of potatoes."
In the same year he was the second 486 Squadron pilot to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Sweetman leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be at the North Shore Memorial Park, Schnapper Rock Road, Wednesday January 21 at 2.30pm.
His family ask that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to Hospice North Shore.

Very very sad to hear of Harvey's passing. Visited him and his wife many times at their home in Devonport. Always had the time to talk and always interested in my family. A heavy heart today.

re Jack Priest. He was flying AZL for James Aviation with Jack Humphries when I first started part time loader driving in 1960. Loaded for him quite a bit until he went to Air NZ. Had not seen much of him until I caught up with him in Hamilton at the launch of the restoration of AZL.

Jack was a devoted aviator, keen cyclist and a formidable supporter and protector of his family, dogs and friends. Jack loved and lived life to the full and will be loved and remembered always. A funeral service will be held on Friday January 30th in the Fountains Memorial Chapel, cnr Wood & Elliot Sts, Papakura, Auckland at 1.00pm. WHITE, Ronald William (Ron). (Ex RNZAF Service No. NZ443142 WWll). Passed away peacefully on Sunday February 1st 2015 at Tauranga Hospital in his 90th year. Father of Tim, Jon, and Jane. Grandfather of Brooke, Stronach, Robin, Marshall, and the late Benn. Closest companion of Pat Murray. Brother of Val and the late Laure.
