The rank in WWII was abbreviated as W.A.L., so what did it stand for? i didn't write what was above, that is what was in the Herald. But I thought that Woman's Auxiliary leader was what it stood for too in the WAAF ranks. I have been told by WAAF's that the ranks went: WA2 - Womens' Auxilliary 2 - equivalent of AC2 WA1 - Womens' Auxilliary 1 - equivalent of AC1 WAL - Womens' Auxilliary Leader - equivalent of Leading Aircraftman Is that incorrect? WWII WAAF ranks were: Air Commandant Group Officer Wing Officer * Squadron Officer Flight Officer Section Officer Assistant Section Officer Warrant Officer Flight Sergeant Sergeant Corporal Leading Aircraftwoman # Aircraftwoman 1 # Aircraftwoman 2 # * Highest rank attained in NZ WAAF # Strictly speaking these are not ranks but classifications (ditto RNZAF's AC1, AC2, LAC) Source: Women in Air Force Blue - The story of woment in the Royal AIr force from 1918 to the present day, by Squadron Leader Beryl E. Escott. The NZ WAAF, as with the RNZAF, followed UK practice. Errol

Stand to be corrected on this one, it was a long time ago, but as I recall it was whilst ferrying an Piper Aerostar, something went wrong just short of PagoPago.

Can somebody remind me of the details surrounding the untimely death of Bob Shewry whilst on a ferry flight ? Robert Stanley Shewry was lost north of Pago Pago ferrying Mitsubishi MU-2 N109TW from Hawaii to New Zealand on 22 November 1981. Shewry had put out a Mayday saying he was going to ditch due to fuel starvation as a result of being unable to transfer fuel from his tip tanks. The partly-submerged wreckage was spotted a short time later, about 75 km north of Pago Pago, but a later search failed to find it again or any trace of Shewry. An NZPA report stated that he had made more than 40 international delivery flights. Errol

Thanks Errol. Yes that accident all comes back to me now as I had just a few weeks earlier flown Bob into Fiordland and he was most uncomfortable flying in the mountainous terrain as compared with oceanic flying.
O.K. I am now looking for details of an other accident in the Auckland area c1966.
This fellow who's name eludes me was, I think a sales rep for Rex Aviation.
My memory tells me it was a Cessna Twin. I think he was the only person on board.

Sorry to report the passing of Peter Beaumont (known affectionately as PeBo by most) - a well known member of the NZ Warbirds and Auckland Aero Club. Some of us younger guys at the aero club used to joke that if the wings fell off his plane PeBo could still fly it back - he had a real knack for all things aviation! Peter did a lot of the display flying in the Trojan and was an all round good guy who will be sorely missed.
Service will be held at the Ardmore Warbirds facility on Friday the 7th.

That is sad to here. I don't think I ever met Peter but have certainly watched his Trojan display many times. RIP

Flew with PeBo once in the Cub, back to Ardmore from the Barrier. Pointed out all the possible Cub strips, there were a lot of them! He was instructing at Waitemata before AAC.

I was saddened to hear of PeBo's pasing. A great guy, 37 years of Waitemata/Auckland Aero Club service, a great ambassador for Warbirds, and not to forget his time and hard work with the RNZAC, of which he was president for a number of years. RIP PeBo.

I've not seen any evidence to suggest that he enlisted earlier. Black, incidentally, was one of the Fitter IIEs who was sent to the US in March 1942 for a course on the P-40. Errol

Pebo's service will be held at the Warbirds hangar at 1200 hrs on Friday, followed by a gathering at the Auckland Aero Club. Gavin has sent me some fantastic photos of Pebo in the T28 Trojan, and I would appreciate any other photos that you may have of him. He not only flew the Trojan but the Slingsby, Harvard 78 & 53, Pitts Special S2-B (MAD), Piper Cub (BOX) etc etc And then of course the famous "topless speech" at Whangarei.
