Nikon D3100 kit two lenses at JB HiFi Manukau for $1188.
Sorry Ralph have to disagree on the VR equipped lenses as I have quite a few shots that would have been blurry without it. It does take sometime to get used too and the VR II is even better.
Cheers

Cheers Hi Colin its good to have differing opinions, I have VR on the 18 - 200 and turn it on or off depending on the situation Read Ken Rockwells review on VR he thinks along the same lines as me Mind you he and I both could be wrong but I tend to think the proof is in the photos and I get the odd one that isnn't too bad Regards

As mentioned on another thread I bought a lens from B&H in New York and it was stopped at the border so I could pay the GST on it. There is quite a high allowance but I am unsure of the figure now. $1100 I think would exceed the allowance so the one in JB HiFi may end up cheaper at $1188 incl GST? Also buying overseas you will have no NZ warranty and will have to return it to where you bought it. I think that is still how it works correct me if I am wrong.
Cheers PS Be very careful with overseas web sites as the non reputable could be cheap clones passed off as the real thing.

Better to buy local, like Colin says, see and hold the camera before you buy, and hang on to the receipt and warranty afterwards. No worries about damage in transit. I understand Nikon has a very good service setup here in NZ (McAlisters?) and I'm sure that any warranty issues would be straight-forward if it was purchased here. Photo Warehouse has the 2-lens deal (Nikon D3100 + 18-55/3.5-5.6 VR + 55-200/4.0-5.6 VR) for the same price as Colin spotted at JBHiFi - $1188 - if you can't get to either store, those prices can be used as a sound basis for a bit of old-fashioned haggling at your local store. Another option, since you can buy the body-only for down to $800, is to just buy that, and shop around for 2nd-hand lenses. Another deal, although it's a parallel imported store which I wouldn't recommend for the same reasons as above, a 2-lens including the 55-300mm/4.5-5.6 VR, here: einfo.co.nz/shop/nikon-d3100-1855mm-553004556-vr-p-21523.html?ref=pricespy&osCsid=65ad3028a96821389f083a6daffabc0f

Is the Christchurch Photo Warehouse store (173 Montreal St.) closed due to the earthquake? It doesn't say so on their website, so could be worth a visit. They have several Nikon deals: www.photowarehouse.co.nz/digital-dslr/onlyshow/nikonN.B. They have the D3000, which is even cheaper than the D3100, and probably not a bad camera, but our friend Mr Rockwell is not very keen on that model ("Nikon's worst DSLR - ever"!!)

The guy in Christchurch that the shops used to send their camera repairs to is Ian Sutherland 51A Rountree St Ilam 348 9666. If they still send digitals to him I don't know. I have taken my SLR cameras around to him and found him good to deal with. He has a small workshop at his house.

Just hope mrs doesn't know I can cash in leave as she will be off to the shops for other things. Roll on Nikon D3100

to all the experts, is having an extra battery handy. any one know how long it takes to re charge battery This is very camera-model specific, as well as use-specific I haven't got a spare battery for my D7000, as I've found it isn't required for how I use it. I also have my older D80 as backup if I muck up. I do have a spare for my D80, and used it occasionally at events where I shot a lot (e.g. Omaka 2009, Taupo Joust 2009). As you are learning to use it, you will use more power (looking at the screen a lot etc). Live View (i.e. using the screen rather than viewfinder) and video will chew through the juice, VR lenses will to some extent as well. I imagine that you will find a spare useful (for stress reduction if nothing else), so if you can get a decent deal when you buy it go for it. If you find the camera manual online, it will probably answer the recharge time query. Its around a couple of hours for the D7000's, which holds 1900mAh vs your 1030mAh.
