My first proper camera, the only one I have bought, was Olympus and it was excellent. It was a film camera though and so old hat, and then i dropped my bag one day and the casing of the camera cracked and light showed on the film so it's now stuffed.
Now I have two Sony's, both given to me.

Your images from today are very likely recoverable, I can't remember which thread Dave H asked about this recently, but various solutions were provided.

If you can't read other cards from Windows Explorer, I'd seriously consider uninstalling the new software (via the uninstall option on the menu entry for it if it has one, or from Control Panel).

I just need the small window to show up to select which program to upload images from. I'll find it soon.
oh bugger it. forgot I had a USB cable included, and is the correct one without having to muck around with this ferrite thingy. now why did I not remember that before I re formatted the card. ggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrr learning process.

Hi Beagle. I have a spare copy of Photoshop elements. It is a few year old but would most likely do the trick for you. If someone can confirm it would work with your new camera I would be happy to post it to you.
Let me know.

cheers guys. everthing is ok. just instead of inserting my card into the camera I am using the USB cord which is fine. One day i will get the card to go but at present fine. Just a bit sad I lost all my images from today but it was just practise and no doubt I will be doing lots more. Just the mrs was getting a bit bored sitting in the van as she had finished reading her womens weekly. Had the radion on am, listening to ZB talkback but could hear chatter in the back ground from either tower or somehwere on the airfield. one thing that surprised me as I was using the lcd screen to look at the images after snapping away and the ones I had taken shooting through the hire wire fences, the wire was not in screen.

Just got a 10 minutes explanation from my girlfriend about how this works (I knew the effect, but not the nuts and bolts of how it comes about). You would have got approximately the same effect with most cameras, assuming they were focusing on the relatively distant object - this is easier to arrange when you have a handy focus ring to turn. As you use it you will find various things like this, the SLR makes it easier to tell the camera what you want it to do, as well as giving a higher quality result.

Picasa which is free to download is pretty good for sorting photos, very basic tweaking, cropping etc.
It will work with your 3100, just need to download the photos first into a folder, and then it will automatically find them.

beagle, for image editing, I've found software such as Nikon's and Picasa are both OK, just take a bit of getting used to. I use a stand-alone image editor, Adobe Fireworks (fwx!) more-or-less equivalent to Photoshop/PS Elements, but either of the above will do most of what you need.
However I don't like the way they try to import, index and organise all your photos for you, and prefer to set up my own folders and photo filing system, using Windows Explorer.
The best way to import files from the camera is to use a Card Reader - much, much faster, and lessens the likelihood of an accidental reformatting. They only cost $29 for a basic model.
You take the card out of the camera, insert it into the Reader, and then connect the Reader to your laptop/PC by USB cable. When you plug in the USB, the usual "Autoplay" window pops up - choose the "Open folder to view files" option, and you can import the files from the card via the usual Windows Explorer Select All (click+Shift) and Drag to Folder.

cheers guys. The autoplay window is not popping up, even when I put one of my other cards in the slot. Just wondering if I have clicked something to not show the window anymore, but I don't think ther eis is anything on that window to do that. Spent an hour after work around the back of the airfield with the setting sun behind me. not many movements at 4.30. Did better at lunchtime where I got EK 777 landing. will upload then in the next few hours. Dinner first, starving..............
