I have been around aircraft in many roles all my life. Never used a side stick but have flown and worked on aircraft with a variety of control configurations... the only memorable one was the Airtourer. I have never flown a large jet passenger aircraft but I know that the aeroplane flies itself largely, - the pilots would not have a hand on the controls that often. The Airbus guys, or airline guys will obviously know more about it and want to chip in.
I think we are intrigued that as a teenager you have experienced both stick types. Actually used them ? Kids in the cockpit went out way back, 9/11 and the the little Russian boy put paid to all that a decade ago... before your primary school days..
Oh sorry, some of the new generation microlights have them I believe. I don't go there myself.

a side stick in an airliner just seems so weird. you would think having normal controls would be so more natural and easier to fly. I suposse next they will be in cars.

Well i haven't flown a plane with the side stick per say, but both a joystick and the steering wheel type. Yes i have been rather fortunate to able able to fly several planes. Just think about how things are worded when you type them on the internet. As you get no tone or attitude with just words, so things can be taken the wrong way . Don't laugh but i have flown a larger plane of sorts haha... A 737 simulator, one of the full cockpit ones was a lot of fun. I can take humour but just read it before you post it as someone may read it differently .

I would just point out that I joined the Air Force when we still had Hastings and have been involved with aircraft ever since both in the Air Force and as a LAME. I also have grandsons older than you so I might possibly have just a little more aviation (and life) experience than you have.
BTW its per se latin for in or by itself or intrinsically

Good one, it is all good humour.
The Newwcastle song is before your time but was legendary for those of us old grumpy pricks here. About the only thing to get us to smile these days.
I realise we have a couple of parallel threads running here but more than a few of us were in the mob and have seen your postings on the other one. Life is all about upsets, s**t many guys are still pissed off with Helen and the F16 deal. The same here with the Transport fleet discussion, you can have all the big ideas but you really have to be a politician to be able to blow it and stuff it up for everyone. Let's not forget that the bosses in the military are the Minister, the Cabinet and the PM etc. Their job is to shaft the Air Force.... If you can't take a joke you should never have joined up. Rule No. 1 stuff.
As for the 737 simulator, I would love to try one of those. A lifetime ago I was rated on the 737 as an engineer and always fancied that I would do alright flying one.
I think the steering wheel use to be called the control yoke. The other steering wheel is called something else....

Sorry to disappoint you Crabtree, some of us are resigned to the fact that, barring a huge monetary windfall for our government or incredible support from a friendly nation, this is as good as its gonna get for some time. We're pretty darn good at making do with what we've got. Nice pics tho, do appreciate seeing them!

I' like to get C17's, at least 4 and 4 C130J's 48 F15E's although they aren't building them anymore so we'll take either 48 Euro fighter or F18F's, probably F18F's so we have parts and training in common with the Aussies, some Hawks too Yes would be nice but where do you suppose we'd get the money? That is a lot of oil we would have to get out of the offshore exploration wells. After the Rena disaster drilling for oil isn't a very popular thing at the moment. The F15 production line isn't closed because they have just been offered to the Japanese. C17's to big for our needs, the Grizzly be more suited because it has better rough field capability etc. They just have to sort its issues out. As I understand it, a Spartan is almost the same price as a Hercules. If NZ were to go down that track, and knowing governments' records of the past, we may well find ourselves with a fleet of Spartans in 20 years time and no Hercules replacement. Another reduction in capability!

A400 sounds kinda expensive 130 million euro a piece (that's 2 brand new C130J for one A400 ) It would be better for RNZAf to buy something that proven like the C130J With some similarities to current C130H fleet cutting down familiarization for crew and trades etc. Plus our close neighbors Oz US Singapore operate them already. Think airbus was looking at axing the A400 anyway due to lack of funding technical problems etc.
