Hopefully this will come across as a major announcement and will be embraced by the forum.
For a while now I have wanted to do something like this and now I hope to finally see it come to fruition.
I am planning to create a semi-regular show all about the New Zealand aviation scene and its people. This will be available as downloadable audio episodes, pretty much MP3 podcasts, that you'll all be able to download and listen to on your computer, or your iPod or other MP3 player device.
The plan is to focus each episode on a different subject so there's plenty of variety. Some will be all new interviews and others may be edited from interviews I have made in the past with WWII veterans or other personalities.
I have a long list of ideas and potential people to contact for interviews, ranging from warbird pilots to restorers, to aircraft designers and builders (homebuild and production build), historians, veterans, mechanics and maintainers, stalwarts of societies and museums, archivists, artists, collectors, airshow organisers, authors and many more topics.
I plan to do a lot of interviews over the coming months and next year to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. But I will also try my best to find interesting civil aviation subjects too, from airline staff to home builders to glider guys to aerobatics champs to aero club people, etc.
I hope to also get to some air events and record reports on site, and interviews too at the events. And I hope to get to some workshops and museums and get an inside look. Meanwhile simply due to logisitics and budget a lot of the interviews will be carried out by phone, but that will be fine.
I have a lot of interviewing experience, having interviewed around 250 to 300 veterans on audio tape and video now over the years, not to mention some famous TV stars in another life too. I also have the recording equipment now which has been a big boost, thanks to getting my hands on a great top notch digital audio recorder. I also have an amazing network of contacts --- YOU GUYS AND GIRLS OUT THERE!!
And because I am going to try to tell the indepth stories of the people on the forum and their parts they play in the NZ aviation scene that this project has been dubbed 'The Wings Over New Zealand Show'. So I hope you'll get behind it and download, listen and offer feedback and ideas when the shows finally start getting published.
My biggest hurdle now is working out how to get a recorded show up onto the internet so you can all download them and enjoy them. I hope to have them as a section on my website if possible, but I'm also aware they have to be hosted somewhere with loads of space and the right mechanisms available so you can download the shows. If anyone out there has done this sort of thing before and can talk me through it I'd appreciate the assistance as I'm a bit of a novice with such technology.
The other thing I'd like to get, if possible, is some aviation-related sponsors who can contribute some funding so the shows can be hosted online and so I can get around to places and create the shows, or to help to pay the phone bills, etc. I'd love to be able to self fund it but I'm broke so some sponsors, who will get an advertisement on every show and on the website, would be most welcome. can you help or can you suggest an aviation product or service who I should approach?
As mentioned I have a long list of ideas for this and I really think it could be quite a winner. I plan to record the first show in a few weeks time when the special guest I am lining up is going to be able to meet up with me and we'll sit down and record it. I already have the second show's guest lined up too, our own Don Simms is going to talk to us about Skyhawks and his awesome book.
Anyway, to sum up -
- Watch this space for the all new show coming soon!!
- Help me with the hosting technical issues if you can please
- If you can sponsor the show please let me know!
- Email me your ideas for shows on your aviation heroes, your favourite NZ aviation topics and of course the unsung heroes of aviation - dave_daasnz@hotmail.com
