Some very nice shots there guys. Cannot wait to see the mags when they come out. I for one am really looking forward to Masterton and Omaka next year let alone Ohakea. Think that the Ohakea show may be mainly current military with few if any warbirds. Hopefully there will be a sprinkling to represent RNZAF historical.

Was the C-130 attempted a Wheelbarrow move there? Haven't seen that done in years. I would say from the smoke behind it , that its part way through a small " bounce " on landing . You mean a small "touch and go"

Think that the Ohakea show may be mainly current military with few if any warbirds. Hopefully there will be a sprinkling to represent RNZAF historical. It's a real friggen shame that no-one was allowed to keep an Iroquois or two and a Sioux or two alive as they would be perfect to see at such an airshow, representing 50 of the 80 years of the RNZAF. But at least the Hercules and Orion fleet will nicely represent modern military, warbirds and historical all together in a nice neat package.

Great Agusta photos, Bruce! Such a sharp-looking machine.
Thanks again to everyone for sharing their photos. It looks like a great show. And there was the Jetpack.
Does a purchase of a jetpack include the starter trolley, or is that extra?

Opinions will vary as to what was the star of the show. Some will claim that this honour belonged to Auster J-1B Aiglet ZK-AOB. We had a really good chance to view this 69-year old lady when it took part in the short take-off and landing competition that was held as part of the show. ZK-AOB has had a really long history in NZ, arriving right at the start of 1947 as a J-1 Autocrat. Here is ZK-AOB at Rongotai in April 1947 in the hands of its first owner, Eric Grey It was converted to J-1B Aiglet status by Farranty Desborough at Feilding in the mid-1950s and rattled around a number of mostly South Island private owners until ending up in the hands of the SVAS in Masterton in 1990. Stored for some ten years, it was restored to fly again in the hands of Brian Hore of Nokomai Station, Lumsden, in 2001. Brian flew the Auster in the competion and racked up a creditable score, but of course could not win against the lightweight state-of-the-art SuperSTOLs

Brian flew the Auster in the competion and racked up a creditable score, but of course could not win against the lightweight state-of-the-art SuperSTOLs I was one of the judges of that competition on the Saturday. Don't ask me how I got suckered into that (I still don't know myself), but Peter was sitting only a metre or so from me chuckling about how I wasn't quick enough to say no. There were about a dozen people in the gold pass grandstand who ended up as some of the judges. I think Ando may also have been one of the judges on the Saturday. I gave the Auster a high score for engine-handling, approach and smoothness of landing because it was so out-classed by all of the younger aeroplanes. The Auster was superbly-handled on both days and deserved to get a high score, even though it's actual take-off and landing distance measurements weren't so good.

KTJ. You're right. I too judged its handling high. It did very well against the more modern types and, if memory serves, did not get any disqualifications.....

Superb photos of the Auster there Peter! It looks so fast in that last one! I suspect that is the first time in recorded history that anyone has used the words 'Auster' and 'fast' in the same paragraph.

Great work Peter. Spoke to John Romain a bit about the aeroplane and it had two schemes in the movie which were Yellow 10 and Red 6. Was going to watch the movie again to see how often it appears but havent had time. Phil Makanna and I were fortunate enough to fly with the Buchon and Spitfire PV270 late Friday afternoon and luckily for us the weather was stunning with not even a bump so the guys could get in nice and close. Will be a while before I can post any but here is a close up of John, got him in nice and close and due to the ultra smooth conditions I have never seen (or heard!) a fighter so close, just magic!

You and Phil Makanna? I love how you casually mentioned that, what an experience. I can't wait to see the rest of the photos! I have one of your Buchon air-to-airs as a desktop wallpaper.

For the fourth Warbirds Over Wanaka in a row, I was on the same flight as Phil Makanna when I flew home. On one of those flights (following WOW2012) I was seated right next to him and we had a good chin-wag all the way from Queenstown to Wellington. Following WOW2014, I got to chat to Phil while we were waiting in line to board the flight to Wellington and he remembered me from two years before. I think he heads to Hood aerodrome to take some photographs of TVAL's latest aeroplanes following each Warbirds Over Wanaka.

KTJ, you're right on the money there. Guessing that the Ghosts for 2018 shall have at least half its pic from Hood. Phil's a really nice bloke. Met him before the 2012 Wanaka show and have been irregularly in contact with him since then. If you ever get the chance ask him about his T.6 incident.

I order copies of both WWI and WWII Ghost calendars directly from Phil's website every year (plus a second copy of each for former TEAL/Air NZ Captain Geoff White's granddaughter, mailed directly to her in Wellington) and I always receive a hand-written thank-you note from Phil in the packaging with my calendars.
