Nice pics of 'AOB, Peter, although John King informs me that it was an Auster J/1B Aiglet since I also quoted it as being an Autocrat. I did point out that "It was converted to J-1B Aiglet status by Farranty Desborough at Feilding in the mid-1950s" To elaborate, the Autocrat came new with the Blackburn Cirrus engine - 100hp. In Desborough's hands, ZK-AOB was upgraded to an Aiglet using parts from Auster 5 ZK-AVG which had crashed in early 1953. Thus it acquired a Gipsy Major with 130hp. I have flown an Autocrat and the lack of power was - startling - so I can well see why they did it.

Auster seem to have been a strange bunch, with the names Aiglet and Autocrat. The definition of an Aiglet is the plastic or metal tag or sheath at the end of a shoelace. And looking up an Autocrat,as I suspected, is political and an autocracy is a system of government in which supreme power is concentrated in the hands of one person. Supreme power in an Auster???!!!

Possible meanings?: (1) Austers can be operated on a shoestring and (2) "I may have my faults but being wrong about the correctness of owning my Auster is not one of them!" Errol

You and Phil Makanna? I love how you casually mentioned that, what an experience. I can't wait to see the rest of the photos! I have one of your Buchon air-to-airs as a desktop wallpaper. Phil and I have been doing photo flights together at Wanaka since 2008 so its been a while now. Always look forward more to the flights we do than the show itself!

It must have been about 1966/67, we had ZK-AOB in at Rex Aviation Dunedin for a C of A, it had a Blackburn Minor 1 engine at that time, 90 hp, it was owned at that time by Allen Faulkner of Gore. isc

Nice pics of 'AOB, Peter, although John King informs me that it was an Auster J/1B Aiglet since I also quoted it as being an Autocrat. Although it was nice tio see the Auster, Technically it's a J1/S which is a J1 brought up to J1/B standard by the addition of a Gypsy Major 10Mk2 engine and a two place bench seat in the back in place of the single side facing seat. It would only be a J1/B if i it was build in the factory as such. It;s all very confusing when it came to the models of Auster and the CAA don't have it down, my Auster is also a J1/S but registered as a J1/B

Thank you for the clarification, Peter and Mit, my knowledge of the intricacies of Auster names and types is not great, hence John correcting me there. The Blackburn/Airdisco Cirrus is interesting, can't be too many aircraft around flying with original Cirrus engines, although the Gipsy was designed by the same guy.

One of the things advertised previously for the show was the launch of a NASA balloon. Did that happen?

One of the things advertised previously for the show was the launch of a NASA balloon. Did that happen? That was never advertised as being part of the airshow. However, it was promoted on the airshow website as being something which would be happening a couple of weeks after the airshow and the balloon's payload was supposed to be on display during Warbirds Over Wanaka, however I didn't look around at everything on the airfield, so didn't see it, but I did overhear people in the gold pass grandstand talking about it, so I presume it was on display in one of the hangars. The scheduled launch date was today, but the weather caused NASA to postpone the launch. They are now looking at Tuesday as the next possible launch date.

I love the spectacular air-to-air photograph on the cover of the latest issue of KiwiFlyer magazine showing the Masterton-based Kittyhawk and Corsair enroute to Hood Aerodrome following the Warbirds Over Wanaka 2016 airshow. I didn't even need to open the magazine to know who is the photographer.

Just got home to Masterton this afternoon after being away for most of the past couple of weeks and headed down town to discover the Warbirds Over Wanaka 2016 book and DVD sitting in my PO Box at the mail centre. No doubt I'll get around to watching the DVD sometime over the next week or so, but I took a quick squiz through the book and noticed the names Gavin Conroy and Phil Makanna showing up in a lot of places....Gavin's a lot more often than Phil's. Awesome photographs too!

To be honest, I haven't actually got around to watching it yet.
I was a bit busy the week it turned up and I put it aside, then I forgot all about it.
I must dig it out and watch it.
I imagine, based on the past couple of official DVDs from Warbirds Over Wanaka, it will be a slick, professional production, although aimed more at the general joe public market rather than the aviation enthusiasts your excellent productions tend to appeal to, Allan.
Which reminds me....when is your Dogfight! vol.2 coming out? I've seen you taking plenty of footage at Hood Aerodrome and I cannot wait for the next installment.
