In that case I totally missed 06 - I never saw it on Saturday, but to be fair from lunchtime onwards I stayed around the crowdline and jet park. Up til then it was helis > Singapore Herc > RNZAF Herc > RAAF C-17 > fence > Seasprite. Disappointing as I was keen to have a look! The static P-3 wasn't there in the morning on the Saturday. It went on display after the massed formation flypast in the afternoon (which didn't happen on the Saturday despite all of the aircraft taking off for it!). Wow that is so totally weird that I didn't see it Saturday - the a/c in front of the RAAF C17 were not far from where we sat for the day & I wandered over there a few times... then mooched around those a/c after the event, to give time fro traffic to clear. Agree it wasn't there Sat morning but it must've also snuck away quickly at the end... I'm still scratching my head! I sooooo wan't to see it even though I knew a walk-thru was not an option.

You do all realise that the P-3K2 has stealth mode, right?

That explains it, thanks Dave. I was so confused.

You do all realise that the P-3K2 has stealth mode, right? Ah, of course.... silly me! Another reason I guess I may have missed it was with the sun out I was guzzling water & therefore making regular trips to the 'amenities trailer' and believe me, there was nothing stealth about me on one of those sorties!!!

Hi all
In between taking photos I grabed the vid cam now and then to get some video footage as well.

The P-3 was there only for a few hours, then; by the end of Saturday it was gone. Early morning Saturday there was a Sea Sprite in that spot.
Parked in the paid parking area on site, couldn't have been easier getting to the airfield.

A couple of observations that made me smile on Saturday: - the Avenger started up with some difficulty, much smoke and with wings folded. I was in the line for the Atlas and there was a young guy and two young ladies (late teens/early 20s) behind me. One of said young ladies, staring at the Avenger, said incredulously "They're not gonna fly it, are they?!" The old bloke next to me in line and I tried not to laugh. - I walked over to the jet park, along with about half the crowd, as the F-16 taxied back in. Behind me I heard a small voice say "I want to walk up to that man and give him a firm handshake." It was an 11-12yo girl. - seeing kids wave at the Black Falcons as they taxied out - the troops deployed by the NH90 were led by Sgt Stern (sounds like a Marvel hero) and the Howitzer crew were commanded by someone named Howe - a very cool moment was the first pass by the Spitfire. So many people going "WOW!" as she flew by.

The other thing to note here: in the wake of 2012, the comms this time around did not instill confidence, either! Just read back on this thread. The armed forces should (surely) be top notch in the disciplines of logistics and communications. And no, that doesn't include streaming video to Facebook. I hope that didn't take resource from any other tasks needed on the day! For those of us who were, unfortunately, unable to attend the Facebook video streaming was actually very much appreciated! The resources required to provide this service would have been miniscule in comparison to it's audience. Well done, RNZAF!

I actually thought the facebook page and comms were pretty good overall - any gripes I had over quite specific questions I wasn't necessarily expecting an answer to were minor compared to seeing social media employed as well as they did here. As for pics I'll put some up over the weekend if people are keen.

Yeah, my boy was at the fence line waving to the Black Falcons as they went past... and it was great they were waving back. I hope the RNZAF can keep the Black Falcons active (or at least regularly practicing), rather than putting them on ice between bigger shows (I have no idea what the plans are). A lot of people around me were particularly wowed on some of the moves... as someone mentioned, they literally "wowed". I hope the Black Falcons realise how much their displays impressed the crowd.
I suppose my first comment, about putting them on ice, was maybe about the Diamond 9. I'm not advocating for the Black Falcons to be a 9 team, but how cool would it be for the Diamond 9 to chuck in a barrel roll and a loop... i appreciate that's not easy... but with practice they can do it. Looked through my photos, and seeing the Diamond 9 in formation is one of my favourites.
As for the Spitfire's first past... it wowed a lot of people. How cool would it be to have a Mustang following behind in another sneak pass.
Oh, one thing... have any of our aerobatic teams ever done red, white and blue smoke? I can't recall ever seeing that here.

I see everyone liked the Viper display... for me nothing beats a Hornet display. That was my favourite of the two. I've seen a number of Hornet displays over the years and Saturday's wasn't all that great. You could tell it was the pilots first show. What was more impressive was the RAAF SQNLDR flying the F/A-18B who flicked into a steep turn 50 feet above the runway when he took off. I thought to myself, "that is what 2500 hours on type looks like". Unfortunately Saturday's was the "flat" display due to the cloud. Both the practices I saw on Friday had more vertical components and were much better for it. It looked like the standard routine I've seen from the solo Hornet over the last decade or so.

There definitely wasn't a static P3 on Saturday, it was there for Sunday only. On both days the flying P3 landed after initial fly-past then took off again shortly afterwards and returned to Whenuapai in the early afternoon. The massed formation was disrupted Saturday due to cloud in the form up area and no opportunity to recover due to the tight schedule of the event, so was a staggered formation instead. The massed formation was achieved Sunday.

I saw the second F18 practice on Friday from Frecklington Road (is that the correct name?) which was significantly better that Saturdays low performance. However I thought the Viper performance was stunning by any standard. The commentary annoyed me to start but in the end I enjoyed the enthusiasm it instilled into the display.
Well done RNZAF on a great show which I enjoyed immensely.

I'm sure he gave the bird on the way past! Great display. The USAF did itself proud - far better ambassador for the United States than hashtagnotmypresident!

Hi all
A short vid of the C130 flying on Saturday. I apologise for the quality as I was taking mostly photos with the DSLR. I use a small handheld video camera for the vids.
Dave, the commentator mentions the name of the crew of one of the C130's (2.29) It might help you with the airshow archives to record the names of some of the crew.
