Sorry if this is a nuisence question, is there a layman's (whoops layperson's) version of how all this works. There a various levels of class, I don't understand how a pretty much stock Yak has a chance against a super modified Mustang or Sea Fury that has been re-engined? Thank you................
So you race in a lower class and if you go okay you go up to a higher class, bronze, silver to gold?
I know one thing way more interesting than a modern car race, well done #35 and her team, the world's fastest Yak 3?!

This YouTube clip has all the Unlimited Gold aircraft going down the Valley of Speed. Still pump my fists seeing Full Noise there! Of all those beautiful engine noises I surprise myself that I think the Allison sounds the best!

So you race in a lower class and if you go okay you go up to a higher class, bronze, silver to gold? If you win Bronze/a C heat you have the chance to be bumped up to Silver/B, or from Silver to Gold. That's how everyone's favourite Yak can go from being placed 16th out of 16 and not even getting to qualify and ending up in the Unlimited Gold race. An incredible story that it seems was a big hit with everyone over there.

Coincidentally Simon Gault was there and posted a video interview with Graeme on Fighter Flights' Facebook page. Very good summary by Graeme and enthusiastically supported by Simon who encourages all to share the video to let the NZ public know what has been accomplished. Dunno how to link the video here but scroll down the page to view. www.facebook.com/Fighter-Flights-1692781167670489/

And without the 16 second penalty would have come 6th in front of one of the Furies! I would think they'd still be 7th as they'd done 6 laps to the Furies 7 in the same time.

Some more videos of the Unlimited Gold race have gone up on YouTube:
This one has some focus on Voodoo in the pits before the race, and at 6min a shot of Voodoo and Strega BLASTING past Pylon 8 - the race itself is shot from Strega's pits so it's a rollercoaster ride!:
Great to hear the crowd applaud and cheer for Graeme and Full Noise as they taxi out and take off in this one:

Here's the Unlimited Silver race that Graeme won. Filmed from the cheap seats in 'valley of speed'.

Never been that interested in this stuff, I guess I'm in the keep them stock camp but that was quite exciting, bit like a car race the slower traffic created a slot for the overtake. So pleased that a Kiwi Yak did so well although I can't really understand how a stock Allison engined Yak really has a chance against a highly modified Mustang or a Sea Fury with a re-engined larger motor for that matter?
On that note were all the Furies re-engined it looked like one of them still had it's Centaurus engine?
Thanks for posting these clips Zac, great stuff.

One Sea Fury, Dreadnought, has the Centaurus, which is why it's a lot more powerful than the re-engined versions.

Thanks Dave, that clip put up by johnnyfalcon was great, interesting hearing the patriotic American's rooting for the Mustang, almost had a cold war feel about it, they cleared it up making sure everybody knew she had an American engine.
I want one of those tshirts, "FULL NOISE." I hope they fitted a couple of cameras into the aircraft would be great to see a pilots point of view with the ground speeding by at such low altitude!

I'm curious how the Yak would have performed with the race engine performing on-song and, consequently, the removal of any sense of need to be conservative with the power.

I did see in one of Fighter Flight's clips that the camera behind Graeme's head was switched on just before he raced. Also I know he has a 360 degree camera that they use for the ride flights, so it'll be interesting if that was fitted during the racing. I think from a few comments I have seen that they are already keen to go back in 2018, if only for the marguerita machine competition.

One Sea Fury, Dreadnought, has the Centaurus, which is why it's a lot more powerful than the re-engined versions. Dreadnought has an R-4360 Pratt in it. It produces about 4000 hp and i think a Centaurus is about 3000 hp.

Hmm, one of them had a Centaurus, cannot recall which if it isn't Dreadnought. I'm no expert.

Aha, it was "924", the T-20 in Royal Navy colours that has the Centaurus. Sorry all.

I must say, I do prefer the Centaurus Sea Furies over the others. The only time I've been to Reno was in 2003, Dago Red and Rare Bear were the two contenders for first place gold. Rare Bear was running P3 Orion blades which looked really cool! Dago Red won. Does anyone know what is done to the engines between races? Spark plugs changed? Oil screens checked etc? I was thinking in the case of Dreadnought with 56 spark plugs, there's a fair cost involved in a new set of plugs let alone anything else. How much would one spark plug cost for it? $100 US???

I've seen lots of spark plugs for Allison V-1710s on eBay, about US$30 for a pack of ten. No idea as to their serviceability though.
Dreadnought was the first Sea Fury to get an American engine, back in 1982 or so. They call it The Buick because it's so reliable.
