We all need it Pete. This year we have had four airshows cancelled. The Sunday of Wings Over Wairarapa. Classic Fighters in April. Warbirds On Parade in June due to weather. And now Classic Fighters a second time.

It was so lucky that Jenny, Tom and all the troops involved at Hood managed to get Wings Over Wairarapa off the ground on the Friday and Saturday. The punters have not the slightest idea of what is involved in putting on an airshow (or any other major public event for that matter), nor do I think they care. All they see is the machine in the air, the cars going around the track or hear the music. I am sure that certain of them think that overnight the show fairies just wave the magic dust and up pop the toilets, merchandising, food outlets, grandstands etc. The effort to put all that together takes a very dedicated team over a very long time, lots of stress, many things going wrong, battling with insurance companies - both before and after if the weather goes bad, and the hope that other 'incidents or events' (like Covid), do not intervene. Insurance companies always look to the "OUT" Clause at page 4,321, Para 6780, line 3784 and word 975 to get them out of having to pay anything in the event that something happens. Many organisers have not only put in their hearts and souls into getting a show up and running, I know of many who have considerable personal financial investment in what they have tried to do. My hat goes up to them. For my part all I have to do in my limited capacity is to talk. Sometimes in the rain but mostly in the sun. Lets hope that the grind of the lead up planning for our favourite events in these troubled times does not result in those mainly volunteer organisations and groups throwing the towel in.

Looking forward to 2023 and hopefully sooner....I need my NZ "fix". It is very badly overdue I know what you mean Ando, it's been more than four years since my last time to Omaka and I'm yet to even go into Dangerous Skies, let alone realise my childhood dream of seeing John Smith's aircraft!

Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre is selling a selection of event merchandise items that had been produced in advance of the Classic Fighters 2021 event before it was cancelled. T-shirts, polo shirts, caps, drink holders and pins. They are also selling "Supporter Packs" of event t-shirt, cap and pin badge. All intended to recoup some of the costs on the merchandise produced for the cancelled event. Details on the OAHC website store: shop.omaka.org.nz/collections/classic-fighters-merchandiseI've already placed my order. Now the wait until 2023.
