25 March 2024 RNZAF AIRCRAFT OLD AND NEW SET TO WOW AT WARBIRDS OVER WANAKAThe Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) will embrace its history and future at this year’s Warbirds Over Wanaka, with the air show being the final southern public outing for the retiring C-130H (NZ) Hercules transport aircraft. The RNZAF has been wowing aircraft enthusiasts across Central Otago skies for 36 years at Wanaka warbirds airshows, and this Easter they’re back to delight. Every current RNZAF aircraft type will be seen at Warbirds Over Wanaka, subject to availability. Some will carry out flying displays, while others will be on static display for the public to get up close. Some will be working to provide transport support to the biennial event. The Air Force Heritage Flight will also be at Wanaka, including a recently restored P-51 Mustang in its first public flying display. A new RNZAF P-8A Poseidon will also be seen in action for the first time, demonstrating a simulated raft drop with a low pass down the airfield. It will be the final air show for the retiring fleet of No. 40 Squadron C-130H (NZ) Hercules, and they will be celebrating the iconic aircraft with a Formation Thunder flypast, a handling display, Kiwi Blue parachute display and a lakefront flare drop that promises to be spectacular. “Events such as Warbirds Over Wanaka provide an opportunity for the RNZAF to display its aircraft capability, showing how it can support the people of New Zealand,” said Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Darryn Webb. “Domestic air shows and display activities enable the RNZAF to inspire, educate and engage with the communities it serves. Not only do they allow for the demonstration of skills and capabilities of the RNZAF, they also support the preservation of the RNZAF’s history.” No. 14 Squadron aerobatic display team, the Black Falcons, remains a cornerstone of the weekend with the Beechcraft T-6C Texan II aircraft, and helicopter enthusiasts can enjoy a No. 3 Squadron A109 two-ship handling display, before they team up with a No. 6 Squadron SH-2G (1) Seasprite helicopter and No. 3 Squadron NH90 for a combined winch display. Squadron Leader Jim Rankin is the RNZAF Air Display Director and has been to every Warbirds event bar one, as both the military Display Director and Civil Display Director. The air show was about more than celebrating aircraft in the air, he said. “The role demonstrations and handling displays are a chance to practise and sharpen the flying skills required to operate our aircraft across the range of outputs we deliver for the New Zealand Government. “Whenever an aircraft gets airborne though, it requires more than just our aircrew to operate them – it requires technical staff to maintain the airframes, working alongside logisticians, refuellers, security forces and firefighters. Everyone has a part to play in delivering our military air operations,” he said. The Warbirds Over Wanaka air show is held from Friday 29 March to Sunday 31 March at Wānaka Airport. ENDS No. 40 Squadron’s long-serving C-130H (NZ) Hercules will be making its final appearance at Warbirds Over Wanaka this Easter as the type is replaced in the coming year Every RNZAF type, subject to availability, should be on display at this year’s Wānaka air show Aerobatic display team, the Black Falcons, will be the RNZAF’s cornerstone of the weekend

No RAAF fast jets at WoW as far as I’m aware just the USAF F16s. You may have heard some jets participating in the big exercise off East Coast Aus on at the moment. Civil flights from Lord Howe have to get clearance to transit to Aus due the activity. May have been F35s or Super Hornets maybe? www.airservicesaustralia.com/MATS/mats_supps/Temporary_MATS_Supp_NSW_SQ_2024_06.pdf

Has been stuffing up their loads as they have to carry extra fuel.

Does anyone know why there have not been any radar returns on Flight Radar 24 from the Wanaka region today? Rest of NZ has been showing everything as usual.

There's currently (8:45AM) a few GA aircraft showing moving around the apron, and a Hercules seemingly parked off to the side. Also a pretty steady stream of aircraft on track to the airfield from all directions.

I noticed a query about 14 Mustangs and 24 Mosquitoes sold for scrap to an Orchard in Holdaway's Road Lower Moutere.
My Dad and his brother were the two who purchased those aircraft and it is interesting that I am 82 years of age now and have been putting a family history together for our family which includes my Dad and his brother purchasing the aircraft and bringing them back to the orchard in Central Road Lower Moutere where they were dismantled and all the aluminum components were melted down to create structures for fruit grading machines that they were developing at the time. The wheels were used for orchard and farm trailers.
I was a young fellow then but was so impressed that years later my wife and I got our pilot licenses and over the course of time we owned two aircraft, an Auster that we re-built at Peter Lacy's workshops at the Nelson Airport using one of our staff who had been a flight mac in the war to go over to Nelson each day and work on the aircraft, and later we purchased a Cessna 206 after we sold the Auster.
My name is John Williams

The most superb weather provided the canvas for a spectacular day of flying. Beautiful aircraft with emphasis on historicity in a beautiful environment. I sensed most displays were conservative, but well flown.
Highlights: NZ2423, NZ2308, NZ5648, Lockheed 12 and the Golden Age segment, F-16, American Eagle Patriots (L-39 intentional tail-slide(!))

Nice to see Jan Chisum's (nee White) beloved Gipsy Moth ZK-ADT up close and personal in the TVNZ 1 news tonight. What is not generally known is, that her father, Stan White, flew that aircraft from England to Australia and after being shipped across the Tasman Sea, from Auckland to Hastings in the 1930s.

It was spelled out clearly and repeatedly during the de Havilland formation segment.

It was spelled out clearly and repeatedly during the de Havilland formation segment. Maybe and that's good. I said "generally known" and was meaning by forum members in general, not just attendees at WOW.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing, looks like they turned on an outstanding show after the disappointment of the last two events.

Top 10 Warbirds Airshow for me, the weather, the attendees and the atmosphere made for an enjoyable weekend. I am so pleased we got to see a Mosquito display down here. A few photos until the pros start posting. All taken on the Friday where the weather was not the best. IMG_9203 by C R, on Flickr mosquito by C R, on Flickr IMG_9053 by C R, on Flickr
