A hangar collapsed in the wind only last year in the South Island and destroyed the aircraft inside.

How are the Forum members getting on in the storm? I saw Dave on FB talking about loss of power and several big trees down in Cambridge.

Just a tad windy in One Tree Hill (no, I'm not going to walk up the actual hill to see what it is like).
I note both SH2 Karangahake Gorge and SH29 Kaimai Ranges are closed, so get to Tauranga via Lake Rotorua. And Gisborne cut off.
Only airliners I can see on FR24 N of Palmy are international into AKL (a couple from ZQN are on their way). A RNZAF King Air has left Whenuapai for Ohakea or Welly.

Via Stuff Live NH90 helicopter in Napier to assist Emergency Management Minister Kieran McAnulty said an NH90 helicopter has arrived in Napier to assist those trapped by flood water. He hoped he could give more information later in the day on the situation, when asked how many people have been displaced.
Defence Minister Andrew Little says more Defence Force personnel on standby Little, the new defence minister, said hundreds of Defence Force personnel were on standby to assist with the emergency, while 200 had been deployed. "We expect more will be needed over the next few days and possibly weeks, and [the Defence Force] is confident that the requests they expect to receive will be met." Unimog vehicles had been used for evacuations in Muriwai, as well as helicopters elsewhere.

That storm last night was absolutely the worst I have ever been in. I have never heard wind like that, and sadly dozens and dozens of large trees in the neighbourhood were knocked over. The house was shaking and the noise was like continuous angry surf, punctuated with even bigger massive hits that were clearly the ones snapping trees. I was awake most of the night wondering if we'd still have a roof by morning, and listening from 1.45am onwards to a chainsaw where some hardy soul was attempting to clear Lamb Street which had a load of 100+ year old trees come down. We had no electricity from about 8.30pm last night till just before 6.00pm tonight, and no local WiFi or landline phone, and the internet access on my mobile was very patchy at first, then none. Glad it has settled down a bit now but it's still wet and windy out there. Cambridge was supposed to be on the edge of the storm according to all the predictions, so after enduring last night that scared me so much, I feel very sorry for those in the heart of the storm.

Wonder what the big storms will be like in another 20,50,100 years when climate change really takes hold. I think we are enter a very different world than the one we used to know.

Glad to hear you’re okay Dave. Shame about those trees, however could’ve been worse if they came down in someone.

This is "season change" Ando. It was flipping cold rain and wind, and most of the leaves have come off the trees, so my conspiracy theory is we are now in Autumn.
However we have not actually had a summer here in the Waikato. Most days over the past two months have only reached about 26C maximum, which is all good by me.

Sad to hear that the volunteer fireman Dave Van Zwanenberg, who was killed at Muruwai in the house collapse during the cyclone, was a member of the North Shore Aero Club and likely known to a lot of aviators.
