As we discovered over here with the WA floods, you can't bring anything in by air until the runways dry out. Lighties first, then heavier (C-27J) and finally up to the "biggies" (C-130J & C-17). So, depends on the condition of the runways and whether they're waterlogged or have surfaces damaged from the weather/floods/etc.

One reason our new Hercs will all have imaging systems is to assist with assessing landing conditions. Very useful if it removes the need for a recon flight by a P-8.
HMNZS Canterbury will be in Christchurch Saturday and will then be available.
A couple of extracts from the NZDF updates:
A C-130 Hercules this afternoon Auckland with a further water treatment plant that will help restore water facilities to Gisborne and it will arrive this evening. It will also have on-board medical supplies including 80 oxygen bottles and electrical supply parts to assist in the reconnection of power.
With a better picture of the range of emerging tasks, we have now reached out to our colleagues in Australia to seek some help. At this stage, we are finalising the details but anticipate an additional aircraft and support staff will arrive next week. This will ensure continuity of support through this period of high tempo operations.

From the Mounted Trooper FB site At short notice, in the dusk of Wednesday evening, V22 rolled out from Waiouru in support of the NZDF’s response to Cyclone Gabrielle. Mission: Find alternate routes into Wairoa and beyond. The troop successfully achieved this in the early hours of this morning having traversed various slips and obstructions. They remain in the region providing valuable information on the state of local communities and infrastructure. www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=589198663243584&set=a.312411577588962

My wife, as a checkout operator in Tauranga, almost certainly processed some of that stuff heading to Hawke's Bay. She sold 4 boxes of milk to one customer who was donating them. Chances are that is them on the tarmac.

I see the Taupo-based C208 jump ship JMP is flat-out on just the one route Palmie to Wairoa and return. Anyone know what she's carrying?

Seeing the GA squadron of light aircraft being used like this does my heart good! Great stuff all, well done.
Any news on the state of GAPS museum?

Great support! Just goes to show how light GA aircraft are invaluable in this situation. The fletcher would have a reasonable payload

Good to see making sure the right stuff goes to people that can make use of it immediately. www.stuff.co.nz/national/131272571/cyclone-gabrielle-rotorua-aero-club-flies-generator-and-supplies-to-floodaffected-areasWhen Sarah Small called Hawke’s Bay Women’s Refuge, as Cyclone Gabrielle tore through the region, to found out a generator was needed, she kicked into action. Within a couple of hours, Small, the director of Waiariki Women's Refuge in Rotorua found a generator and spoke to her husband – a pilot with Rotorua Aero Club - to organise a flight. Small sought clearance from Fire and Emergency to fly the generator down.
