As if the top of the north island needs it right now, bit of a system heading that way after the weekend!
Admin Note: Given the seriousness of this storm I have changed the title of this thread.

It's not looking too good at the moment. The forecast keeps changing but the most recent has the centre passing directly over Auckland - 180 degree wind shift in a short amount of time is a concern.

I hope the council are taking the opportunity right now in this lovely weather to unblock all the drains this time.

Now is a little late, but they have been going at it for the last two weeks. I hope they have sorted out the roster of key-holders for the release gate on Onehunga lagoon (why the SW motorway was flooded).

They also need to sort out some of the badly designed drains that do not drain water, and have grates that clog. I saw some videos on Facebook that make the mind boggle that a council can design, sign off and build storm water systems that simply don't work and even just looking at them dry it is obvious. After thousands of years of progress, we then get modern bureaucracy and overpaid idiots.

Oddly enough the councillor most responsible for delaying the stormwater refurb of Meola Rd (outside MOTAT2) was complaining today about the bad drains on Meola Rd!

Looks like now the big wind shift has changed and it's going to be more consistently from the southeast, but still looking exceptionally strong and quite prolonged too.

www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/norfolk-island-residents-hunker-down-as-cyclone-gabrielle-hits/Norfolk Island residents are hunkering down and authorities have declared a red alert as Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle bears down with wind gusts of up to 155 kilometres an hour and dangerous surf conditions. Several residents are without power. Although downgraded to a Category 2 storm, it is still expected to bring destructive winds, heavy rain and abnormally high tides. The most serious weather is expected to hit from 4pm to 7pm NZT. Emergency Management Norfolk Island (EMNI) earlier moved the island, located about 1500 kilometres or a 90-minute flight away from New Zealand, to a red alert from 2pm NZT.

No. 40 Squadron may well be pretty busy after this.

We moved most of our aeroplanes into a hangar this afternoon and tied down the one remaining outside with multiple straps on each corner, looks like a lot of other aircraft owners at Ardmore were doing the same thing. Have seen a 172 flipped over in the wind, don't wish to repeat it!

I see on Flightaware that southbound Regional flights in the Central North are flying at 12100 ft, much lower than usual

It has been wet with drizzle showers and really quite cold all day here in Cambridge. But of a breeze but nothing significant yet. Feels like winter.

Have seen a 172 flipped over in the wind, don't wish to repeat it! Don't ask Kermit Weeks what happened last time he did that in the face of a Cyclone! I think it happened in Hokitika or Greymouth a few years ago too. But I'd still rate their chances better in a modern hangar than outside! So far it hasn't actually been too bad, looks like Northland was getting some pretty strong gusts yesterday and the Mokohinau auto weather station out in the gulf was recording 70kt gusts at one point, but in Auckland it's just been a strong but not alarming wind and light to moderate rain. This afternoon does look like there's some serious rain coming though so I think the worst is probably still to come.
