As time goes by quickly I thought it a good idea to start a thread on the upcoming Warbirds over Wanaka 2010 show. I am making my bookings and will be there all three days. Anyone else going and will we have a forum members catch up sometime over the week end?
Hope to see some of you there.

Will there be anything left at Wanaka to see?

I very much doubt I'll be there this time. Contrary to popular belief the Mosquito is very unlikely to be there, or anywhere other than the workshop till at least the end of 2010 I', reliably told, so don't book a ticket just to see that debut.

Bruce, I guess all going well there will be two Mustangs, two Spitfires, two P-40's, the LA9, the Yak 3, the various classic jets, the Harvards, Thunder Mustang, no doubt Jurgis and his beasty machine, the Yak team, the RNZAF, helicopter displays, and lots of other great acts. They can still hold a great airshow there, regardless of whether the museum is still great or not I guess. But they might have to get a big overseas drawcard to entice the average puner back too I suppose.

I'll be there for all three days, either Gold or Silver Pass - haven't decided which yet.

What about the Corsair and FW-190 (isnt it going to be here by Christmas?)?
The WOW web site states there is going to be an overseas aircraft never seen at WOW before..would that be a refrence to the FW-190 or something else?..perhaps it could be something like the A-26 Invader from Aussie..
What about the RAAF ..will they be there with an F-18 or something?

I'll make every effort to be there, but unfortunately finances once again mean I'll probably be missing it.

I'm flying to Queenstown on Thursday 31st March (all booked) and will most likely be staying at Frankton. I'll be driving over to Wanaka for all three days of the airshow.
I didn't attend Warbirds On Parade in 1988, but I was at the first Warbirds Over Wanaka in 1990 and I've been at every one since then. In 1992, they put in a Gold Pass grandstand for the first time to finance the 109 coming to NZ, so I purchased a Gold Pass and have had a Gold Pass for every airshow since then.
However, this time I will be in the Silver Pass stand — I purchased my pass a few months ago. A group of us who always meet up at WOW and sit in the same spot in the grandstand (back row, overlooking the commentary bus — we're the group who sledge the commentators, and get sledged right back but over the PA system) discussed things during Classic Fighters and we all decided the main reason we have always purchased a Gold Pass was to get a grandstand seat. However, the cost of Gold Passes is getting a wee bit expensive now and we decided that as we mainly wanted a grandstand seat, we would switch to the new Silver Pass grandstand for next year.

Tim Skinner (who owns Capital Books) told me a couple of months ago he had heard a strong rumour that a Hawker Tempest is going to be at WOW. Who knows? I suppose the possibility is there. I guess we'll find out at the airshow whether it is only a rumour or not.

Well as nice as it would be for a Tempest to be at Wanaka, I don't know how close the two (?) restorations are to flying....and I don't see a Tempest II being much of a drawcard? Re Tempests, very informative thread here: www.warbirdinformationexchange.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=31621 It seems the one in the UK is closest to flying. I also heard Tim Skinner at Masterton or Omaka one year saying that the next year Wanaka would have a B-17. Hm. I think I missed that show! I'd love to see the FW-190 at Wanaka dueling with Brendon Deere's Spitfire! Probably the most authentic WW2-era dogfight seen at a Kiwi airshow since 96. Interestingly the WOW site says the poster for the show will feature the surprise aircraft.....can't wait to find out what it is! I hope to be at Wanaka, staying in the same house as last time 5min from the lake. May drive rather than fly, not sure just yet.

I should think a Tempest would be a very big drawcard to many Zac, just because it's not a bloody Fletcher doesn't mean people don't like them... ;D ;p
Seeing a Tempest in the air for the first time in 50 years and the first time ever in NZ would be magic. There's one very close to flying in the UK. I remember how massively impressive the Sea Fury was, and I know it is very missed on the airshow circuit, so it's actual wartime forebear would really draw in the crowds I think, especially as it would be once in a lifetime to see for many kiwis. Especially if they could get a Sea Fury from across the Tasman to visit too. Plus there's the NZ connection wih No. 486 Squadron. Pity the Mossie won't be there as they could have a No. 485, 486 and 487 Squadron line up.

I was going to mention a Fletcher as the big attraction, but I didn't want to state the obvious I'd sure love to see a Tempest - I never even saw the Sea Fury - and I agree the Kiwi connection is there. I was just thinking of the fact its a Tempest II with a Centaurus, rather than a V with a Sabre (more of a Kiwi connection?). Me, I'd love to see a bomber or two at a Kiwi show. B-25, A-26, A-20, I don't care I'm very jealous of the US and, to a lesser extent, the UK airshowgoers for the selection of heavies they enjoy. Still waiting for a 1:1 flying Stuka, complete with siren.

Regarding the prospect of a B-17 — I can recall the WOW airshow where Kermit Weeks was in attendance (was it 2006? or 2004?) and while being interviewed in the commentary bus, stated he'd love to be able to fly his B-17 to New Zealand to display it at a future Warbirds Over Wanaka if a sponser could be found. Know anyone with really deep and really well-stacked pockets?

I'm definitely hoping to be there, last year was a cracker!
Not sure how I'll be getting down there- maybe staff travel down to Queenstown if the flights arn't all booked out/if I have my PPL by then, maybe a long long x-country/or if anyone else is flying down from Ardmore and would be keen to cost share on avgas.

There was some talk in Wings magazine before the 1994 or 96 event that a B-17 was hoped to be the star attraction. Never happened of course.
However one of the US B-17 teams, Liberty Belle I think, was looking at a trip to Australia and the Pacific in the near future so why not bring it to the Southern Hemisphere's largest warbirds airshow?

Liberty Belle sounds about right, although I do remember December 08 being mentioned for the LB to Oz scheme....
I would love to see a B-17 in NZ skies. Although the type has been seen here before...so, an aircraft not seen in NZ before...? Me262 perhaps?

What about the Anson? Must be getting close to flying. I guess some World War 1 stuff may go down there....FE2B? DH9?

DH9? !!!!! When did this happen? I demand pics! I've heard not even rumour of a DH9! The site specifically mentions "an exciting overseas aircraft ... one that has not been in the country before", so I don't think the Anson would come under that. That said, I still can't wait to see it fly! And has there not been a DH9 in NZ before? My guess is either Me262....or Ju52 ;D A DH9?! SUPERB!

While it's still looking like a while till I get to my first Wanaka, it is intriguing. I'm guessing an A-26 has flown there before?
