MiG-29 might convince the govt they need a strike force ... or not.

"And look out ladies and gentlemen, unexpectedly coming from the west, it's...the Luggate Faction and their Harvards! Again!"
Is an Me262 too much to expect? I remember rumour of a P-38, MiG-3, how about we bring the Vulcan over? ;D

Surely the 'mystery aircraft' will be the Flug Werke Fw190, won't it? A type not seen in NZ before, it's about the right time to make its public debut too. All these grandiose speculations of Me262, Vulcan etc don't stack up when there's a recession on and you have to remember that an airshow in NZ would never make enough money to afford bringing the likes of these jets here. Even the Temora Sabre is out of reach imho.

Anyone got a spare couch down Wanaka way this Easter? Turns out the group I stayed with last time are unlikely to get down, so I'm on the hunt for accomodation. Damn.
Yes Dave, I was thinking the 190 too. I'd guess its debut will be at Christmas Wings or a similar event at Omaka, and then perhaps Wanaka. Fingers crossed - I've wanted to see a 190 over the Clutha valley for a long time.

Isn't there a Fletcher based at Luggate you can sleep in, Zac?

Fingers crossed - I've wanted to see a 190 over the Clutha valley for a long time. I'm planning on grabbing one of the Railway Welfare Trust holiday apartments at Frankton over Easter. They're first come, first served (with bookings accepted six calendar months ahead), but the lady who makes the bookings is one of the regular commuters on the first train from Masterton to Wellington on weekday mornings (that I regularly drive), so I generally tell her what I want and on the date in question six months before, she logs into their reservation computer as soon as she gets to work and makes the booking for me. I haven't missed out yet doing it that way. At this point, it will probably be just me heading down there, so I will have plenty of room if anyone wants to crash there. The units are three bedrooms and sleep either six or seven people. There is a double bedroom, a twin bedroom and a third bedroom that is either a twin, or a triple (bunks + one single bed) The way they work is the tennants take their own sheets, pillowcases, towels and teatowels and everything else is provided. The tennants are responsible for cleaning the apartment before moving out, although the caretaker at Queenstown will clean the flat for $20 if that is desired. I am planning on booking an apartment from Wednesday 31st March until Wednesday 7th April. However, I will be actually occupying the apartment from Thursday 1st April (I'm flying into Queenstown on NZ5401 from Wellington, due to arrive at 13:20hrs. I will then be leaving again on Tuesday 6th April, flying from Queenstown to Wellington on NZ5406, departing at 12:55hrs. I've got a rental car booked for the duration, so transport to and from Wanaka Airport (all three days) is no problem. I will however be heading off very early (not long after 05:30hrs) on both the Saturday and the Sunday, as I like to be there when the gates open. So the offer is there if anyone is looking for accommodation and doesn't mind a one-hour drive over to Wanaka Airport each day via the Crown Range road.

I've got one of those apartments at Frankton secured in my name.
I'm going to grab the twin room for myself. The double room is reserved for ZacYates (and his girlfriend) if they still want it.
So there is a third bedroom with a single bed and bunks (sleeping up to three persons in total) if anyone wants to go to Warbirds Over Wanaka but doesn't have accommodation arranged.

Hello,
I am a Canadian and will be attending Wanaka in 2010 (three nights at a nearby B & B). I just missed Wanaka when last in NZ and determined then that I wanted to attend when possible. I arrive on Thursday evening and must depart on Sunday (alas). I would welcome any ideas as to the best tickets, viewpoints etc.
On a different note Hurricane 5398 (as queried elsewhere on your site) ended up as follows!
SARGENT, Grover Stewart, Flying Officer (or Pilot Officer) (P) J11976. From Pointe Claire, PQ. Killed February 4, 1943 age 21. #133 Bulldog Squadron. Hurricane 5398 was undergoing a flying test at night when it crashed at Pender Island, BC. Son of Grover S. Sargent and Louise Sargent, of Pointe Claire P/O Pilot Sargent is buried in the Pointe Claire Lake View Memorial Gardens, Montreal, Quebec. They Shall Grow Not Old @ page 671.
Regards,
John Henderson Canadian Aviation Historical Society Ottawa, Canada

Hi all! The lovely lady Tiff has decided against coming along next year, so I'm on my own and will be flying the same flights as Bruce/kiwithrottlejockey. Planning on doing some extra, non-warbirdy things....such as a one-way trip in a Cresco

Looking through the latest issue of Classic Wings - another top issue, thanks Graham! - the P-40C being worked on at Ardmore looks close to flying....perhaps it is the surprise machine?

Hello John,
In the past there have been two different types of ticket to Warbirds over Wanaka, being General Admission and Gold Pass. For 2010, they have introduced a new Silver Pass as well. General Admission means you are basically either standing on the fenceline or the grass (read dust...) behind the fence. Gold and Silver pass have grandstand seats and better catering plus some behind the scenes access. I have always used GA and found it great, get there nice and early and get a good spot on the fenceline and you're set for the day. Sightlines can be awkward thanks to speaker stands, grandstands etc, and of course depends what the prevailing wind is doing as to which way the takeoffs and landings are going. Sun also plays a bit part in photos as its either behind you or straight ahead. If you prefer to sit down on a decent seat and have some elevation, think about Gold or silver pass. The queue to the carpark usually starts early, ie at 6am there is always a queue going prior to gate opening at (I think) 7am. Getting out of the carpark is always a hassle too, so wait around for an hour or so after the show finishes before trying to get out. Sunday is traditionally much quieter than Saturday too, crowd and traffic wise. Other than that, just enjoy....

I've been to every Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow since the first one in 1990 (I missed the Warbirds On Parade airshow in 1988). The first Gold Passes were issued in 1992 to cover the cost of the Hannas bringing their 109 to NZ, so I coughed up and purchased a gold pass. Since then, I've always purchased a gold pass, and although expensive, I've found it great to be in a grandstand seat out of the huge crowed elsewhere on the airfield. I've always met up with the same bunch of blokes and we've grabbed the back (top) row of the grandstand at the commentary bus end.
However, at Classic Fighters earlier this year, we all met up in the gold pass enclosure at Omaka and discussed whether or not to grab gold passes or silver passes. We came to the conclusion that the main reason each of us had purchased a gold pass for each Wanaka airshow was to get a grandstand seat. So we decided that as that was all we basically wanted, we'd all purchase a Silver Pass for next year's Wanaka airshow.
So that's where I'll be this time....in the Silver Pass grandstand.

I've done Gold Pass once before at Wanaka but the cost is off-putting for me this year. For Friday I'll go General as its a good day to run around buying stuff and drooling at other stuff, whereas the full show days I intend to go Silver. Looks like a cheap alternative to the Gold

Looks like a cheap alternative to the Gold I'd jump in soon, as I've heard the Silver Passes are selling like hot cakes. Quite a lot of people I know who have always purchased a Gold Pass for the same reason as me (to get a grandstand seat) have jumped ship to the Silver Pass enclosure for next year's airshow.

I was just thinking......what if the mystery machine is actually something like an F-22, or another current military machine not seen previously in NZ?
