Are you tossing up whether you will attend, Dave? Bruce's hints are tantalising to say the least!

LOTS of mustangs of at least 3 different sizes, Multiples of Allison and Merlin, plenty of round engines and at least 3 different kero burners. High wings, low wings, mid wings, bent wings, soft wings and rotary wings. Lots of noise, smoke, bangs, rattles, rumbles and roars. All of course subject to Wx and serviceability... (I'm only an exhibitor this year, not an organiser, but do have some inside info...) nudge/ wink.

Be glad it wasn't held this weekend....its been precipitating down. I'll have a word to Toni and see if she can arrange some good weather for the weekend I asked her this evening if I could book some nice weather for the weekend and also for Whitianga on March 6 - kind of a long running bad joke between us... "can I have some fine weather on xxxx date?" "sure, you going flying?" Seriously though, it's probably a bit too early for any accurate prediction and given the guess work that's being published as weather forcasts lately, it's probably easiest to get somebody in Tauranga look out the window on Saturday morning Anyhow, I'm sure it'll be great and I wish I could make it - plenty of photos please. Fingers crossed for Whitianga, hoping to make that one.

Rain, rain stay away, airshow folk pray by John Cousins | 2nd February 2010 Organisers of next weekend's Tauranga Airshow have their fingers crossed that the country's weather forecasters have got it right. An anti-cyclone bringing settled fine weather for the rest of this week was expected to hang around until Saturday and Sunday, the MetService forecasted today. It was in stark contrast to last weekend when the 122mm of rain that fell over the city for the 24 hours to 6am yesterday transformed the weather figures for an otherwise reasonably dry January. The wet Sunday boosted January's rainfall to 176mm - more than 100mm higher than the month's average of nearly 73mm. We are just one week away from the event and so far there is still no list of aircraft on the website to tell us what is attending, despite what we were told by David Love two weeks ago. I'd like to see what is coming from the RNZAF for example, and what civil sport aircraft will be displayed. No update to the website late Wednesday afternoon, which is fairly disappointing. Weather still looking good, if a little warm - much better than many alternatives! I've got my E-ticket from the DC3. Good value-add, suggested contents of day pack listed for example.

Hey guys
What the heck is the difference in the flyiing programme from Saturday's practise day from the Sunday display..are we likely to see a full Sunday display on Saturday??? Its rather unclear in publications and web sites.
What I do know and it has been published in the local rag here is that the participating aircraft will include DC-3 Catalina RNZAF Hercules (only a Herc??) Spitfire Mustang Corsair Kittyhawk (both!) L-39 Vampire A-37
Pretty good line up I reckon

Hey guys What the heck is the difference in the flyiing programme from Saturday's practise day from the Sunday display..are we likely to see a full Sunday display on Saturday??? Its rather unclear in publications and web sites. It was indicated that many of Sunday's acts will fly on Saturday, in a less structured way (no published schedule). At Wanaka 2006, practice day had 2 F-111 displays, as both crews did a practice! The re-enactors are not doing a formal display, but will be 'in camp', doing walk-throughs etc. I agree. I assume that the Red Checkers (and maybe the Airtrainers?) are still on stand-down while they try to figure out why one of them crashed while practising a low-risk part of their display.

You definitely will not see a full display on Saturday - hence why you dont pay as much to get in. The Sport aircraft Association is flying away to Galatea for Competitions and a visit to the Beer can museum on the saturday, arriving back en masse mid afternoon. Getting a herk (even if that is all) is actually quite an acheivement as the RNZAF display bugdet has been cut back solidly this year. Red checkers are currently grounded, but wouldnt have been there anyway as one of the team is getting married! Whilst I can understand peoples frustration with the web site, having been on the other side in previous years there are issues to consider. 1. Although we are all airshow junkies, we do not represent the general population - The great unwashed in general couldnt care less what was ther, providing it was fast, noisy and spectacular. 2. This is the first big show of the season, it is likely that many of the aircraft have been in winter servicing, and any delys there can affect practices and display approvals, so none of the aircraft are absolute certainties 3. The organisers often like to keep certain acts as a surprise. 4. The general principle on all major events is" under-promise and Over-deliver". someone who attends soley to see a particular aircraft that somehow doesnt make it instantly takes a negative view of the whole show - which could still be spectacular. 5. The organisers could always say a major US jet team and C17 will display (maybe even "yummy girls") - The fall out of the Hamilton Fiasco is still strongly felt amongst the sponsors. The organisers are being cautious.
Sure the chap did say at the forum meet that there would be a listing, but he is just one of a large committee, which like all committees (and I've been on a few) may not agree with that particular direction.
Would anyone NOT attend just because ther isnt a detailed listing? there are enough hints on the airshow web page.

I was just going to post the same thing Dave...the ticket says both days - the web site and ticket is not clear on what is happening on either day and for those out of town if they have received the ticket via the post they may think they are getting the full display on Saturday (as one person I know thought - hence my question) ....in any case thanks for clearing up what is happening on Saturday, Bruce

I'm not sure of the exact ticket details as SAA people get them as part of the SportAvex registration. Key thing is, Saturday isnt really the airshow. Its really buy a ticket for Sunday, get the Saturday practice free....

R3egarding the airshow committee's wierd decision not to bother publishing a list of what's coming, and Bruce's comment that the general public don't care and it's only us enthusiasts who'd be upset about it, well I heard last night my cousin (a general member of the public) was thinking about going but was in two minds and probably won't because he has been unable to find a list of what will be there to help decide if it's worth the long drive. I suggest there will be many more in the same boat, and I think the committee's PR people have failed the public.

On the other hand a friend of mine (general public kind of guy) is taking his whole family because of the Vintage and Classic Car displays... he might look up at the aircraft occasionally. Horses for courses and all that... I guess the ticket sales will tell the story after the fact. We'll see. I went for a shufti yesterday because it is the only chance I'll get to fly the Yak in to NZTG during SportAvex/Airshow. Air traffic was busy at times but everyone seemed to grasp the arrival procedures reasonably well. Tauranga ATC are excellent. Calm and helpful. Made the job a lot easier. Even heard a few laughs over the air. I caught up with Bruce at the SAA hangar and there seemed to be a lot of setup activity. Man, it was hot! Hint for the heated. The Tauranga Airport Terminal is air-conditioned... but I expect that airshow punters will be corralled so that they can't hop over to cool down :-(
