Here's an interesting message from Diane Jefferies at the Classic Flyers Museum in Tauranga: Classic Flyers is holding a airshow next Waitangi weekend, February 6th and 7th, 2010. The Sport Aircraft Association of New Zealand has recently held its biennial flyin and airshow in Tauranga in February, the same year as Warbirds Over Wanaka. The airshow is now being organised by Classic Flyers and is growing into a major airshow. We hope that it will come to be regarded as the major North Island airshow in the same year as Wanaka. Our launch date for the airshow is September 4th. Information and tickets will be available from the website from this date. I will include a notice which we are distributing specifically for magazine and organisation calendars, and attaching our first media release and our airshow poster. Please use any material you may wish to for your website, and for your own information. Tauranga City Air Show 2010 6th & 7th February 2010. Full on flying displays on 7th Feb from classic piston engine and jet fighters, supported by a wide range of other types, including helicopters and aerobatic teams. Additionally there is a family fun program for all ages on both days, using the same admission ticket, for the whole show. www.taurangaairshow.co.nz

This is actually the "SportAvex" weekend at Tauranga. This year the SAA handed over the organisation of the airshow side of the weekend to Classic Flyers and Rotary clubs, who will do a superb job of it. The SAA SportAvex (National convention) will be held in conjunction with this event, based at the Tauranga Aero club at the other end of the airfield. I am on the planning committee for this side of things. This means that the SAA can do other cool stuff such as flying competeitions and fly - aways, without getting bogged down with airshow setup (except for the SAA display hangar) and the airshow can still have a great mix of sport aircraft and heavy metal stuff. everyone wins...Should be good!

I hope it will - depends if the guy setting up my troublesome engine controller ever bothers to turn up and finish the job...

The official Spitfire PV270 website has the Tauranga show listed in its flying programme, Keith Skilling as pilot ;D
I just checked out the show website as well, what a great value show this is set to be! The Super Gold ticket looks amazing - park at a "satellite location" and you get helicoptered in and out of the show! How cool is that?

Thats awesome news as I havent seen PV270 yet...hopefully the Corsair, Mustang and Kittyhawk make it too.
I must say its really awesome of Brendon to make the Spitfire so available to many airshows and other gatherings around the country.

Interestingly the Tauranga Airshow website says that the WW2 fighters will be "operating in pairs. Experience in particular the stimulating sound of both British and American built Rolls Royce Merlin engines."
I wonder if MH367 is to make an appearance? I hope so!

ahh that would be an American Merlin Zac..MH367 (and PV270) would be British been a Mark IX...I presume that would be ZK-TAF (Mustang) which calls into Tauranga quite a bit.

Disappointing, I was hoping the "in pairs" meant of same type. Oh well, we'll see.

oo it'll be nice seeing PV270 (if indeed it does come), and of course the Mustang (as always), Kittyhawk and Corsair. Anyone know if the FW190A8/N will be in the country by Feb? or the Mk XIV?

The Mk XIV Spitfire has never left the country and is sitting at Ardmore waiting for other aircraft to get out of the workshop. Another Spitfire keeps jumping back into the queue unfortunately. It will be about two years before we see it flying at the earliest I'd estimate.

PV270, ZK-TAF, two P-40's, the Corsair, Vampire T11, A-37, L-39, plus all the usual suspects Harvards, Yak-52's etc. Oh I'm so lucky to be living in Tauranga. This is gonna be a wonderful show.

If you wish to fly down on the Saturday morning, and return on the Sunday afternoon, (Staying overnight in Tauranga) we have a limited number of seats available - $120.

Also, Im organising a Tent/Stand showcasing the current state of Flight Simulation- This is a joint display used to promote and raise funds for NZFF.org (New Zealand Flight Simulation Forums) and sell RealNZ Scenery (www.windowlight.co.nz) We will have a couple of computers set up showing screen shots and videos and running the various Sims (mostly Microsoft Flightsim 9 and 10) and a stand selling RealNZ stuff. We also hope to have discs containing a collection of NZ scenery for a low price to help raise funds (NZFF is a free forum much like this (Image taken from within Flightsim using RealNZ Tauranga. We will be in a blue tent plastered with NZFF) Stop by if yiu are heading along- It looks like its going to a great show!

We are just one week away from the event and so far there is still no list of aircraft on the website to tell us what is attending, despite what we were told by David Love two weeks ago.
I'd like to see what is coming from the RNZAF for example, and what civil sport aircraft will be displayed.

I have seen a draft for the programme - especially the morning section with Sport aircraft, and it is going to rock - I'm not allowed to say any more as the copy I have is not for distribution (classic flyers are doing all the promo stuff) so I cant say much - just get there early because it will start with a bang! Lots of heavy metal warbirds are in - kerosene burners too. You wont be disappointed. Air Force participation this year will be small - they hadnt confirmed what at our last Sportavex meeting. but budgets have been cut, and with the red checkers grounded the RNZAF cant spare very much. It will be an awesome show, and unlike some shows where they start with slow and less impressive machines and leave the big acts to last, they deliberately are mixing it up, so there will be show stopping acts all through the day. Look out for the SAA display hangar too - we'll be having practical demos throughout Sunday.

I'll be at TG just on the Sunday. With JP displaying TYS as part of the show both days, I'm not arriving via YakAir. There seems to be a fair contingent hopping over from Te Kowhai so I'll probably just hitch. This will be my first airshow for 2010 so I have high expectations....
See you all there.

I'm arriving on the Sunday with a mate in C172 DXQ. That's the plan anyway, weather permitting.
