So even to put these 50's era , inoperative aircraft , which would appear to be beyond economic restoration to operational status , out to pasture ,there would have to be an OK from the US? I had not even considered that and was asking more about how easy or difficult they would be to transport . Are they able to be broken down into components , movable by road ?

F111 G's retired very recently. There are , pressumably , forum members who do know how transportable the Skyhawks are . What is it going to take to move them to museums , if that is what ultimately happens ?

The Close Up item was interesting in that it seem to contradict what had been said on the Skyhawk Sale thread here .

I think this weapon was fitted to the ground display Sea Sprite at the Whenuapai Open Day . I do not know but guess it might be a depth charge

There were two F27 hulks , one is still there it is virtually just a gutted fuselage standing on the grass , and has in the last couple of years been turned around 180 degrees . The other was more complete and stood on the apron , it appeared to loose its engines a couple of years ago . It was marked something like NEPC Airlines and a rego possibly VT-NED . This one has gone since my last visit or at least is no longer visible to the public . There is also another F27 hulk at Christchurch , anyone got any info on that , it was mainly white but with a yellow fin and red panel on the fuselage ?

While passing Ohakea today I think I saw over on the far side of the airfield at the southern end , a Metroliner fuselage , possibly the one from near the Palmerston North airport ? Looked like the tail was seperated but close . Does anuone know anything else about this ?

I agree that the F16 deal was cheap , probably why it is operated by countries we should be at least wary of . I believe we should be playing our part in our own defense and common sense would suggest compatability with the Aussies rather than say the Singaporeans would be wise . As to the single over twin engine argument , I think we did very well with the A4 but we are an island and there is safety in numbers . I go along with the Boeing airliner executive who once said when asked why he always travelled in four engined airliners "Because Boeing do not make a five engined one. "

Slightly off topic but I was never keen on the F16 , it smacked of political expiedence and cost cutting .In my view we would have been much better off getting F18s , more capable of doing the job required and compatable with our obvious ally . But thats just my view .

I understand that many of the problems with our Macchis were very similar the those experienced by the Australians some thirteen years earlier with theirs , water ingestion from wet runways etc .

My son joined to work on the A4 , any thing else was not of interest , when these were retired he went to Australia to work on the F18 . Within a year he had been approached to return to the RNZAF , I know as I read the letter . Financially his return is and was a non starter. Labour is the most right leaning it has ever been and in reality occupies the ground traditionaly home to the Nationals and this is something that National has been completely unable to get its head around , and untill it does find its place again it will remain second . Our current PM stood and protested as a student at the arrival of the A4s and she has seen over their demise . The A4's should have been offered to our museums as there is no way the Americans will allow their sale for anything other than scrap . We should never have disbanded our air combat force , we should have joined our Australian friends and bought F18's in some form of joint force .

Any truth in the rumour that one was rolled , and that sometime later the pilots were in trouble for this ?
