For this tour the King and Queen of Thailand used the Qantas Electra VH-ECA. It seems that they arrived in Wellington from Sydney on 18 August 1962. From the log book of Captain Jock Ross we know that VH-ECA operated Wellington-Christchurch on 24 August and Christchurch-Canberra on 26 August. I've tried unsuccessfully to find an itinerary of the NZ part of the tour. Does anyone know if there was any additional flying within NZ (Qantas, TEAL or RNZAF)? Nothing appears in Capt Ross's log book but there could have been other pilots involved. Did VH-ECA stay in NZ from 18 Aug until 24 Aug? Any help will be much appreciated. Ron

The registration of Fokker F27 ZK-RTA was derived from the initials of Ansett New Zealand Air Freight's Operations Manager, Ross T. Allen.
To remind myself that Air New Zealand's B767 ZK-NBD could not carry pallets, it became No Big Door - to me anyway.

planewriting and pjw4118 Thank you for that information. I figured that AHSNZ would have recorded the serials. I asked the question as a result of finding this photo of F-105D 61-0212 landing at RAAF Williamtown. It was thought to have been taken in October 1965 when five F-105F and one F-105D deployed to Williamtown for Operation Pacific Concord 1. However there are photos of the single F-105D at Williamtown and its identity is clearly 62-4375. Therefore this photo of 61-0212 must have been taken in 1964 when the aircraft were returning from Ohakea. The inbound flight was direct from Guam air-refueled as "Operation Wing Over". Many thanks for solving this problem. Regards Ron

Sorry to create a zombie thread but does anyone have the identities of the 6 USAF F-105D that attended this show? Regards Ron

I managed a series of shots as the aircraft was marshalled tail-in to the freight terminal. It was quiet at the time so the CL-44 did a big U-turn on the bay. I see that KISS performed at the famous Lang Park in Brisbane on 25NOV80. Their previous gig was in Sydney on 22NOV80 so I expect all the stage gear would have been roaded up to BNE. They must have had a lot of gear because it turns out that the CL-44 did a few shuttles. The Qantas Movement Log shows the following:
25NOV80: Denpasar-BNE ARR 1310 26NOV80: BNE-WLG DEP 0745 (4 pax) 27NOV80: WLG-BNE ARR 0025 BNE-WLG DEP 0419 (3 pax) WLG-BNE ARR 2106 28NOV80: BNE-WLG DEP 0225 (3 pax) 29NOV80: WLG-BNE ARR 0220 BNE-WLG DEP 0943
We didn't see it again after that. All times are actual & local.
Beer won't do it. Have to be champers!

I'm pleased to advise that the records for ZK-RTA have been located. One interesting fact to emerge from them is that when Rex Aviation applied to register the aeroplane in NZ they asked for 3 registrations of which RTA was their third choice. The others were ZK-DJM or DJC. Given that RTA stood for Ross T. Allen does anyone know the significance of their first two choices?

This aircraft is now on display at the Queensland Air Museum at Caloundra. Since the aeroplane was acquired in 2008, I have searched Australia, NZ and the UK for the aircraft log books and despite locating a large quantity of component records, the airframe log books were thought to have been destroyed. Just this week, the Australian log books were located and these are now in the hands of QAM. This leaves a gap in log book coverage from 1990 to 1996 when the aircraft operated in NZ as ZK-RTA. Given this recent discovery, I am encouraged to ask again if anyone in NZ knows where these logs might be. Any leads will be greatly appreciated.

Freighter5910 Many thanks for that definitive response. I wasn't expecting such a spectacular result. Sadly A8-136 crashed at Guyra, NSW on 28APR77 but the crew escaped and the module is now at the RAAF Museum, Point Cook. A8-140 was buried with 22 other F-111s in November 2011 but the crew module survives at the Aviation Heritage Museum, Perth, WA. A full list of the F-111 disposals is here: F-111 DisposalsI too would like to see other photos of the formation. Regards Ron

These photos were taken in the vicinity of RAAF Amberley, Qld circa 1974-76. Unfortunately there isn't enough resolution in the original prints to make out an identity of either aeroplane. I'm hoping a former Bristol driver might remember the event. The photos were taken from another F-111. Note the disparate attitudes of the two aircraft!

That's the fallback option but QAM's objective is recovery of the entire airframe.
