Yes it is, as is a panel just aft of the nosegear. I believe the aeroplane had just emerged from maintenance and/or a repaint.

Polynesian Airlines was set up and run by Sir Reginald Barnewall who is hale and hearty in Queensland. I expect to have some input from Sir Reg on this subject but in the meantime here are two of his Princes in colour. Regards Ron

Dave
In Stannage's book he states that the three micarta props were so badly chipped by ice that three new airscrews had to be fitted before the return flight.

Ted Wixted's book "The Life and Times of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith" includes a reproduction of a programme from the Wellington Trotting Club which has been signed by all four crew of the Southern Cross. One signature clearly reads T.H. McWilliams (with an s) The programme is for an event on Sat 15 Sept.
The book also includes a photo of the SC surrounded by spectators at Christchurch on 10 Sep 28. The caption reads in part; "Because of an absence of suitable aerodromes for the larger-than-usual aircraft, the Southern Cross remained at Christchurch until September 28. The return flight was made from Blenheim on October 13 and took 23.5 hours."

Indeed we do. In addition to the F.27 formerly ZK-RTA, QAM also has Heron VH-KAM which spent some time on lease to Vincent Aviation. Curiously, both of these aeroplanes were on static display at an airshow at Mangere in 1992 where I photographed them. Given this trend, I figure it's just a matter of time before the Beriev Albatross turns up at Caloundra Other Kiwi aircraft in the collection are: Pawnee ZK-CEL (restoration nearing completion) Hiller UH-12E ZK-HCQ (stored pending restoration) Nomad ZK-SAL (stored pending restoration) Now how is your new government disposed towards museums who aspire to a Skyhawk? Getting back to the origins of this thread, there is an online census of extant NZ DC-3s which was compiled by Peter Layne. Updates and corrections are always welcome. www.adastron.com/aviation/three/nzcensus.htmRegards Ron

Gents The "Old Bus" and the "New Bus" were photographed together at Brisbane, Eagle Farm on 18 Nov 1987. On this date, the original aeroplane was towed from the old airport to its present location opposite the International Terminal. This image shows the aeroplane coming out of its old display case. To save the original wheels and tyres they fitted Canberra nosewheels. www.adastron.com/squawkid/h1scross.htmRegards Ron

Nice images Craig. For anyone wanting more information on the aircraft there are comprehensive histories on the QAM website: www.qam.com.auBeagle, there's even one of your relatives in the collection. Kiwi visitors are always welcome. Free admission to anyone bearing an A-4. Rgds Ron

Not just turrets. They built aeroplanes too. As for the jetpack inventor, I'm prompted to ask if that's his real name and is his middle initial L?

I have received the following from Colin Couston in the UK. He has agreed that I should post it here for the interest of NZ historians.

I have one 3 day Gold Pass for disposal. Daughter decided that university education and band competition are more important. I'm open to offers - preferably polite offers. Please contact me if interested. ron@adastron.com

Thanks everyone for the leads. I understand that there is a Wirraway project over here in Queensland that came from NZ. It is said to include parts from:
c/n 28-4 VH-CED/ZK-BPU c/n 28-9 VH-CEL/ZK-BZO
Are there any recent reports on the status of ZK-BSQ? The trouble with aeroplanes in museums is that those museums generally want to keep them! Find me a Ceres and I promise it will stay a Ceres.

Hi Peter Many thanks for that comprehensive response. The Pawnee was one of several aircraft owned by Bill Salt here in Brisbane. His collection was auctioned at Archerfield on 04OCT07 due to the owner's ill health. ZK-CEL was purchased by the Queensland Air Museum and trucked to Caloundra on 05OCT07. The aircraft is partially restored and we will complete the restoration as a static exhibit when time permits. Peter, can you remember the colours? The following image was taken by Nick Sayer as the Pawnee was being loaded at Archerfield. And to save anyone asking, no, the aeroplanes in the background were not included in the auction Regards Ron
