The only other photo of the avengers at Rukuhia that i have seen is an aerial shot with them sitting in the rows with the kittyhawks but to far away to make out any detail. Heres a shot of the wheels sitting at kio kio taken last weekend.

This is the engine my mate found out at Matangi. he said an old guy had it and he liked to tinker with it. it has several of the cylinders removed which my mate has.

Dad was a volunteer for the Aviation section of MOTAT. Being that we lived in Hamilton, we spent most of our free time gathering aircraft parts from farms and peoples sheds. There was still huge quantity's of parts around in the 70's. Dad had also started to work on bits of the Catalina for MOTAT. Unfortunately dad passed away in 1979. So alot of his projects were never finished.

Heres another photo of MOTAT's Catalina, looks like it was taken a bit earlier than the other photo on the top of pg 2. The second photo shows the rear fuselage at my parents house in Hamilton.

We had 381 Stuart tanks in NZ from 1943 to 1955. all these tanks had Radial engines, so there's a good possibility some were kept with the thought of putting them into aircraft. The engine in my photos we fitted to a Sherman tank. It was alot of fun to drive but was extremely thirsty on gas.

In all the years ive been looking in guys sheds in the Waikato for goodies, i only have ever found one tigermoth engine. a friend of mine picked up a radial engine out Matangi somewhere which he still has. i will go and photograph it during the week. i have seen at least four tank radial engines in the waikato. the photo shows one we had a couple of years ago. im not sure what farmers would use radial engines for. i know alot of the v12's went into boats

I think it was not so much the US govt back in those days. but the price of buying one of these planes was far out of the reach of the average working man. Times have changed now and when the US govt says no sale, thats the end of it. just look at the armys 113 APC's. all but 14 went to scrap. no chance of anyone buying one.

Hi Bruce, The water in the pool is not filtered or treated at all. Its just a reserve incase of fire. The only water that is filtered at PAC is the waste water which is held in tanks in plant 2 before being released.

Yes the swimming pool is still there but i dont think it has ever been used as a swimming pool. its pretty green. I thinks its a water supply if there was ever a fire. Even the air raid siren which you can just make out on the corner of the old James hangar is still there today.

Hi Tonys18 Looks like you have some really cool stuff from the dump, i first started going down the gully over 30 years ago. Thats where some of the good stuff was sitting on the top, the rest was sticking out of the ground or you had to dig for it. As you know there is still as much stuff there as we ever took out. I suspect the Browning gun in my photo is at your place. As for the story of aircraft buried under the runway, i suspect that most of the stuff buried on that side of the airport is the same type of stuff that was bulldozed over the gully by your place. Most of that being steel and stainless steel. The Aluminum was worth too much to be dumped and so was melted down. Here's a few more photos of Rukuhia that you guys out there may not have seen.

Here's the Business end of my ammo box. The end of the barrel would have fitted into one of your blast tubes.

Yes i have often thought the two photos of the Catalina's were taken at Rukuhia. I have been trying to compare the truck with other photos taken at Rukuhia with trucks in them.
