I'm a bit late here but I've been editing 22 gigs of photos from the week. I'll add a couple of shots from the week... Our family of 3 were this years "BOW photographers". I also shot time-lapse for 3 of the days. Fog on Wednesday and Sunday makes intersting shooting. As did the wind on Sat night. Our gallery here... www.pbase.com/ascend_photography/bow_2010Timelapse snippets here... Back to work.. Pete

We (me, wife + 12yo daughter) were the festival photographers at this years event - 24-28 March. We shot only 22G of photos and 15000 frames of time-lapse. We (the organisers) have had some photo gallery issues so I have been uplaoding to the BOW facebook "photos" page: www.facebook.com/pages/Balloons-over-Waikato/287966065824?v=photos&ref=mfOur time-lapse is also here: www.facebook.com/video/?id=287966065824 - still some work to do but you get the idea. I ran two time-lapse cameras, one with inbuilt TL settings up a 4m removeable pole and the other, my newly designed netbook/camera/software beast. ### note - you don't need to be a "Facebook" user to see the images ###All three of us got a chance to shoot from the air (individually) and from the ground (1st time in a ballon for all of us). Some haze and fog made shooting challenging... with a two-page photographers brief telling us what they need (you gotta show off those sponsors). The wind was gusty at the nightglow... so not much fun. Bl0#dy hard work actually as the wife down on the ground had the "good" camera leaving me up on top of the building with an old 400D!!! Not next year... I smell a 7D coming my way Pete www.ascendphotography.co.nz

An awesome series. The series he did on building the Rororway Executive heli "A heli is born" was the UK's most watch doco of the year a few years back when it aired.

Thanks Colin - I agree that some of these need to be visible. I am researching (nearly there) what I want to build. I just about have my wife on board (a neccessity). I do realise that: a) Wife must be involved or one invites a divorce (and I married a perfectionist - not to be wasted) b) It will wait another 3-4 years until kids have left home. Good reasearch time... c) I will never have $150,000 to get what I really want but $50 a week over a few years will get me a wooden 80-100mph non-aerobatic 2 seat that the two of us around NZ. d) While Jodels are nice, I won't build one...

I could only make the Saurday "show" but concentrated on the SAA "Sports" aircraft - with a couple of the display show planes. I believe the SAA may return to Matamata in two years. Definitely under discussion. My gallery is here... www.pbase.com/ascend_photography/tauranga_2010&page=allPete

I thought my photos might bring a few memories back.
As we walked into the track, my mates father (Dunlop tyre supplier manager from way back) was approached by racers he hadn't seen in 20+ years. Awesome to watch!!! And then the stories started about the quiet beers with Hulme, Maclaren, Amon, and later Kenny Smith who of course is still driving.
Being just youngster (relative term) I remember flying from Stratford to Ardmore for the Wing and Wheels days in the late 80's... even that is over 20 years ago

How's the track??? Bl00di awesum They line up on the grid, go like stink into a descending blind right-hand sweeper!!! Visibility is great for all spectators - a budget grass-only ticket gives you a great view. Stand tickets give you that much more. The track itself is fantastic. 22 yards wide on the tight corners!!! The old drivers had grins for miles!!! Parking was in the farmers paddocks with a free shuttle mini-bus to the top of the hill, 100m from the gate. Organisation wasn't perfect but as first major meetings go, it was stunningly good. I am looking forward to Chris Amon's classic car meeting same time next year. Pukekoe is looking very lame (if not dead) now. The track is booked up for driver training and club meetings almost daily for the next 3-6 months apparently. I'm not surprised. Oh yeah - I even enjoyed myself Now... time for Tauranga SAA and show this weekend.

I attended the recent classic racing (Bruce MacLaren Series) and opening at Hampton Downs with a friend and his dad. I find that my mates dad used to be the Dunlop Tire Field co-ordinator at the original race days at Levin and Ardmore which I'm sure many here will remember. For those that were not able to attend but want a walk through history - here is my photo gallery from Saturday (there is even a P40 in there...). I hope it gets finished I looked and looked and looked at Trademe and tried soooo hard to convince my wife that this would be a great addition to the garage for a year or 2 (or 5). If it had been in The Waikato and not the top of the south, it "may" have been different... Good luck with the build.

I am hoping to but the inlaws are here just for the weekend. Mother-in-Law's partner is a retired RAF / Palmy Fieldair engineer so I will try to convince him to join me for some "time out".

Another newbee... I'm Pete Kirby in Hamilton. I'm 41 but I still refuse to grow up. There are too many old grumpy people out there. I learned to fly at Stratford Aeroclub 1986 and moved to Palmy Nth in 1990. Moved to Hamilton 2000 - still there ;D I do not hold any license any more. I work for a multi-national telecoms company. I have built and flown mainly model aircraft since 1990 and taught myself rc helis in 2006. Member Hamilton Model Aeroclub since 2000. I enjoy photography and occasionally shoot commercially from my electric rc helicopter. www.ascendphotography.co.nz. Greatest achievement - I've written the OSH book for flying rc camera ships down town. Lack of spare time is making this part-time job unrealistic but I will shoot anything. I really enjoy air-to-air shooting and have been known to do this for fun, not $$$ I spend more time with time-lapse projects. I have an almost silent passion for homebuilt and aerobatic aircraft which my wife keeps pretending doesn't exist!!! I frequent a few forums - NZ Flightsim and NZ Civil Aviation are my daily reads.
